Bones as chew toys?

Seems like this is an older practice, as I don't see anybody talking about it on here, or see evidence in pictures. The idea is that they are going to chew on something, so give them something they can get calcium from. Too much calcium could cause stones, especially in males I suppose. Is this antiquated now, with modern feed mixes? Anybody put bones in their cages? Anybody ever heard of this?
 
In her book The Encyclopedia of Country Living, Carla Emery mentions using bones and gypsum board (drywall/sheet rock) as chews to provide calcium. I haven't tried either one of them though.
 
Just realized this was for rabbits. :/
Tin can has a sharp edge, I wouldn't.
Tree branches work, cardboard paper/toilet paper tube stuffed with hay/grass.
