So what would I most likely get if I cross our New Zealand Blue doe with our New Zealand Red buck?

Having a devil of a time trying to get our reds up and going so am trying anything I can think of to get more stock to work with.

__________ Thu Jan 24, 2013 8:39 am __________

We last crossed her with a blue buck and got nine blue kits.

Since they are NZ they could both carry "c" for albino.
So if they both do you could get NZW.
You will also get chestnut, not recognized in NZ,
The only way you could get either red or blue is if the blue carries "e" non-extension,
or the red carries self.
You will also end up with kits that carry dilute and non-extension which will give you lots of things you may not want down the line, like tort & fawn.
I don't know a lot about NZ but I believe they only have a few recognized colors: Red, White , Black & broken. Maybe you want to find another red doe instead of messing with unrecognized colors, unless that's not important to you.

We just eat the colors that dont sell but as hard as its been to get a red doe it seems easiest to try this way.

When I cross our steel buck with our black doe we get some very odd colors indeed but one of them is red. The problem is, she only seems to have male kits. Only once has she managed a doe but it was black so we didnt want it. Have crossed her back with her red son so fingers crossed for a few more reds.

I know I might be the odd one out but I like different colors in the nest box.

A red is a chestnut/agouti with nonextension and a blue is a self black with dilution.

When you breed them you will most likely get a bunch of chestnuts.

You can get other colours if there are hidden recessives in your rabbits and they happen to match up. We can figure out what is hiding in them by looking at the parents, siblings and offspring color.

If you want red, keep breeding to a chestnut. The first red X chestnut kits will all carry the non extension. Keep the does and breed to your red buck, half of this litter should be red. Then you need to work on deepening the colour and may need to buy in Rufus and Wideband stock to get a rich red.

I was going to say purple!
But I have no idea about the real color they may end up...
