Black Tip NZ Red

This little girl was born of a Red mother and Fawn father, both New Zealands. She's the only one who came out with black tips. Her ears used to be more solid black, but now they kinda look marbley. We started our operation in January of this year, so we're still kinda new at all of this.

I know her color is undesirable for Reds, but she's DH's favorite, so she's kinda a pet bunny now. I'm just curious about her genes, where they came from, and if I should try and figure out who's background they are in.


It's a little fuzzy, but the colors are there. That spot on her shoulders is from her sister, who is on cull row.

The bottoms of her feet and her nose are black.

She is a wideband tortoiseshell and not red or fawn.

Genetically = aa B_ C_ D _ ee ww

This means her parents carry the self / black gene rather than two agouti.

Red dam = Aa B_ C_ D_ ee ww

Fawn sire = Aa B_ C_ D_ ee Ww

Statistically 25% of their offspring will be torts (aa), 25% will be homozygous agouti (AA) and 50% will carry self (Aa)

I've been reading some of the other posts, and looking at pictures, and thought that's what you might say.

I think I'll try and figure out which parent it is and decide what to do from there. Thanks, Dood.



To clarify, not both parents have to be Aa? Or do they both have to for the kit to have aa?

Both parents must carry the self gene to have a tort baby and are "Aa" on the A-locus

Posting pictures of the parents will help rule out the possibility one of the parents is a tort but it is more likely they are a normal agouti red and fawn who carry the self gene.

Yup, both look agouti rather than tort.

Does the buck have a silvering gene? He look like a creme very cool !

Hmmm, that I don't know. I've just started in the gene figuring out, but I'll look it up and take a closer look at him. He is a beautiful rabbit, and he throws pretty babies. Though most of them don't have even coloring, so we're working on that.
