Hello rabbit lovers.
As I got interested in rabbits lately; I decided to really get into genetics and how the things work. The easiest way to start learning about it is keeping track of my rabbit genetics and try to understand how it works based on them I figured out. So, in one of the litters back from February, my parents' Black Chinchilla doe (Californian cross) was bred with Chestnut (possibly Chocolate Chestnut, Checkered Giant cross) buck, we got outcome of four kitts. The only buck will most likely develope to be Black Pointed White, as he already shows darker colouration on his nose, paws and roots of his ears. His tail is also darker. We had three BPWs in previous breeding from this pair. The biggest of three does is probably broken Chocolate Chestnut. Smallest doe, Fawn, is ovbiously Fawn in colour. Thing I can't really understand is the middle doe, Blu. Blu is a BEW. Could someone explain how we got BEW from this breeding, and also how does the Vienna gene works? Also, what's the difference between Vienna and Dutch. Thank you in advance, -Marko

Other people on this site know a lot more than I do about genetics but I can tell you this-- if you got a BEW than each one of the parents had to have been carrying one BEW gene because it is recessive to every color - even rew will trump it. The ones who carry it often have dutch markings or random white marks. Breeders who do any color besides BEW don't want BEW in their lines because of the random white markings - and BEW breeders don't want any colors like chocolate or shaded colors because the ruby cast will show up and the BEWs will have sort of purplish eyes.
