What is the best breed for a young child's first show bunny. It needs to be a small breed and very calm natured.

I have been looking into Holland Lops (which we are getting a pair of for my DH), Jersey Woolly's, Netherland dwarfs, and American Fuzzy Lops. If there are any other breeds that are an good option for kids please share. :p

Would any of the above be a bad choice? generally poorly tempered?

I am looking for a new rabbit for my two sons who lost their pets due to the bad feed. :x They had mutts but we are thinking we want pedigreed showable breeds so we can go to rabbits shows as a family and show our bunnies.

Please Help with any ideas and thoughts. :D

At one point I was looking into AFL, very cute. Apparently very nice tempered as well.
When I was at a show, a fmaily had a few jersey woolys. You could tell they were pets, very friendly and just hopped around the table while they waited their turn to be shown.

Nethies are reported to not be a good idea for small children. The one I had was temperamental, but she was a favorite. Of course I was 20 something, not 8.

Cant say enough good things about jersey woolies! They are very sweet and definitely a little less competitive than hollands.

forgot about that. holland competition is fierce in most places. Hollands can take a while to mature, so they can be 1 year or more before they come into their own. And there are so many pieces that need to be right. it's complicated enough that I might not even show my hollands (or mini rexes).

I would not go with a ND, they tend to be a bit tempermental from what I have herd. The other three breeds you mentioned are all gental sweet buns. I love JWs, have a bunch of them & can't say a bad thing about them.

Have you thought at all about Mini Lops ? They are the bunny example of a couch potato, very sweet, gental & calm .... but also a lil more sturdy & less fidgity then the others. I know they are a lil bigger then the others, but max out at only 6 1/2 lbs.

My first buns were Mini Lops. I think my parents made a good choice in picking them for me. I started with a pair, sweet sweet buns, who were patient with my ignorace!! Plus big enough to be "durable" lol !!

I'm loving the sweet temperament of my new JWs as well. Seems like they would make a great kids show bun. I've heard himalayans are wonderful, dutch and havanas are good and small, and if you want to go with a rare breed, I've heard Lilacs are very gentle.

The breed that has the best support, and the most shows, in your area.

You do seem, to also have, a lot of 'general' rabbit shows!

There are very few breeders in my area. Most that are breed mutts. Those who breed purebreds are few and far between. I am finding that traveling is going to be part of the process. There are no shows accept for the State Fair here. We will be traveling to Wisconsin to show. Greenbay area I figure. That puts us traveling 2.5 to 4.5 hours each way to show.

I am thinking that with it being the popular opinion on temperament that Jersey Woolys will be the breed. I like the self black. They look like little itty bitty Scotties that got shrunk like the movie "honey I shrunk the kids". :)

Its official..... I am driving my husband "NUTS". lol

I live in the Upper Peninsula. Escanaba actually. So it is closer to go to Wisconsin then to Show in lower Michigan.

__________ Mon Sep 03, 2012 10:47 pm __________

https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en

Nancy hanchar is in Michigan and has beautiful jerry wolves. :) im getting one from her at convention..

Does she have a website? could you message me some contact info for her? I have spent the better part of the evening trying to find people with Jersey Wooly bunnies with not so much luck. I am willing to wait to buy if need be but would like to find a breeder at the very least. Thanks

Thank you very much.

__________ Tue Sep 04, 2012 8:09 am __________

For as cute as they are you would think they would be easier to find. lol

I found a breeder but I am probably not going to buy from her. Well maybe one doe. But that would be it. Though the doe is a bit narrow in the shoulders. I wish I could get to lower michigan on September 29th for the specialty show. Then I would probably find all sorts. But it isn't possible.

Wish you were closer too, my rex breeder also has jersey woolies. for some reason I thought they were smaller, i saw them for the first time close up a few weeks ago. Very pretty.

jersey woolies should be small. They are a dwarf breed ranging from 1-3 lbs.

it wasn't more than 3 lbs, I just thought it might be more like the tiny nethie I had. they seem much smaller in pictures, they of course those were probably kits, and that was a lot of fur, maybe the body was small?
