I woke up this morning to a text from my dad saying that my mom was being taken to the hospital for DKA which is diabetic ketoacidosis. A potentially fatal condition that happens when your cells don't get the glucose they need for energy, your body begins to burn fat for energy, which produces ketones. Ketones are acids that build up in the blood and appear in the urine when your body doesn't have enough insulin. They are a warning sign that your diabetes is out of control or that you are getting sick.

Apparently my mom had been sick since Sunday. The three of them (my mom, dad and sister) all live in Florida now. If they hadn't caught it when they did my mom could have gone into diabetic shock, a coma or even could have died. As of 9:45 PST the hospital had her somewhat stabilized, but was keeping her for the rest of the day and overnigt. :weep: - See more at: http://www.diabetes.org/living-with-dia ... ZYnLL.dpuf

Oh no! Your poor mom! :(

Was she already diagnosed with and under treatment for diabetes? And if so, was she too ill to check her levels on a normal schedule?

I'm glad to hear they have her stabilized. Hopefully she will be able to go home tomorrow. :clover:

She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 18. Apparently she's had the flu since Sunday (1/31) and if you haven't gotten this years flu yet consider yourself lucky; she didn't want me to worry so told my sister and dad not to tell me she was sick. I do know that when she gets sick, it hits her a lot harder because of her diabetes.

Since I am not there I don't know if she was checking her insulin levels on a regular basis or not.

I'm glad they were able to take her in in time to get it under control. Ketoacidosis is nothing to mess around with.

My nephew has type 1, diagnosed at 5 when he went into DKA - it is a very scary thing.

Diabetics must be especially vigilant when sick - if they cannot keep anything in their stomach (or if it goes straight through) then there is no food for the intestines to absorb and hence no glucose in the blood for the insulin to carry into cells so even with shots their body has no choice but to breakdown fats and proteins to keep cells fed

Dood,

Sorry about your nephew that's really scary. Yeah I grew up with mom being really vigilant almost to the point of paranoid germaphobic. Which is what makes this so scary.

Diabetes is in my whole family so we've had scary incidents. My grandpa almost passed out and could have died a couple years ago because he forgot to eat or got home later than planned. I'm not sure the details but he barely made it in the house and luckily my mom's home office is next to the area of the house he lives in. It's pretty much a guarantee I will get it eventually and I'm on a med that increases the chance of getting it. Hopefully with a new med that came out I can drop that one. I've been using a glucose monitor for the past 10 years to screen myself. It's easier to take a fasting test when you don't have to schedule it with a doctor and go in to the hospital. My non fasting glucose has been higher than normal the past 4 months but it's probably the dosage of that medication that I'm on right now.

So glad that she got to the hospital in time. In the long run, maybe it will have been a good "wake up call" and she'll be more attentive to the potential for something bad to happen.
Prayers that she continues to improve!

So some good news from Florida. My mom has been moved from the ER to the ICU. Her sugars are coming down gradually but they are still keeping her overnight.

It's been a day or so since I posted anything about my mom. She was taken to a regular room today, her blood sugars have stabilized and she has been eating solid food since lunch time yesterday.

Yes, it does! My dad was an ***** and hid a foot injury for several weeks from my stepmother. By the time she got him to the hospital the doctors had to take off four of his toes. They said he was lucky because a few days longer and he would have lost his leg to his knee. He was recuperating for months!

Put a call into your mom tomorrow and tell her she's a popular subject on internet forums and we wish her a quick recovery!!

I will. According to my dad the phone in the hospital that is attached to her bed cannot do long distance calls so he is bringing her cell phone to her so I can talk with her. :D I cannot wait.

How is your mom doing today? Better, I hope! :clover:

Did you get to talk to her yet?
