Hi, folks! Anyone know anyone who would be bringing good meat/production strain Satins or Flemish Giants to the West Coast Classic in Reno, NV, in a few days? I kind of want to test for steel genes in my Americans, and it's almost impossible to find non-steel-carrying agoutis in that breed. So I thought maybe if I had a doe of another meat breed to try crossing to... but I don't want to have a bunny around who can't pull her weight in the production department. All of the young (hopefully lots of them) would go to the freezer.

Let me know if you know anyone! Thanks!

I have a friend that has Satins with AMAZING body type. In fact, I have some Satins from her. I know that she is bringing a few to sell, but if you are looking for something in particular I can ask her about it.

She has mainly blue, black, and chocolate in self and otter. Brokens also in the same varieties.

to do this you need a rabbit that has two agouti genes, since self can hide steel, no shaded Himilayan or REW genes as they can hide steel and preferably non extension so the steel will be blatantly obvious.

Ideally - AA B_ CC D_ ee - which is fawn or red

But - AA B_ C_ (or Cchd or chdchd) D_ E_ will also work - which is chestnut, or chinchilla

Thanks, MSD, I'll have to try to meet her - hopefully she can point me in the right direction.

Exactly what I was thinking, Dood - a nice chestnut (copper in Satins?) from a long line of chestnuts or other agoutis would be ideal. I hadn't thought about the possibility of using red, I have no experience with non-extension genes. How does that make the steel more obvious?

AFAIK, the buck's genotype that I want to test is aa BB Cc dd ??. He throws steels when bred to my gold-tipped black steel doe, who is Aa BB Cc Dd Es_. I am also interested in keeping a blue out of this cross, and want it to not carry steel.

Finally, just to clarify - although I think we are all on the same page here - when I say meat-type or production, I don't mean culls, I mean a line of rabbits that is bred to optimize litter size, mothering ability, growth rate, and fleshiness where it counts. Color (other than being the correct genotype for my goals) is secondary. So I'm hoping to find someone who has rocking Satins or FGs who maybe has a rabbit with less than ideal rufousness or is smutty or such that otherwise is a nice, nice bunny. Some folks seem to think anything that they want to put in the freezer is a "meat" rabbit, to me that is very different from a purposeful breeding program for ideal meat rabbits. I'm pretty sure everyone in this forum has the same perspective, but just wanted to make sure!

Thanks, Jessi
