Hi guys,

So back story on this rabbit was my Aunt's friend's neighbor got evicted and in the process her pets were left behind. This rabbit (named Anya by the friend) was left sitting in a small dog kennel in the front yard. After a few weeks the friend's husband said to get it a new home rather then buying the necessary rabbit gear.

The friend had given it a diet of Kaytee rabbit food, carrots, and lettuce; at least from what she told me. I noticed the rabbit was under weight when she arrived so I started feeding her the same diet as my own buns. Pedigree rabbit food(I know its not that great for them but I don't have the garden in a way that I can do natural [my preferred] feeding).

Anya gained weight; not alot but enough that I didn't think she would blow over in a stiff wind, Washington had a huge wind storm a few weeks ago and in that her hutch was shifted on its blocks, I was able to get her hutch stabilized before she blew over (unlike one of my other occupied hutches which went floor over roof during a large gust). Since then she was eating great for a few days and then eating less the next couple. She was getting hay and fresh water along with her food.

I went out yesterday to find that her water had been drunk, her hay was untouched and half her food was eaten. I refreshed her water, and gave her some more food. When I went out this morning she was dead. Her hay still there, and her food untouched.

I was highly curious as to why she died so I decided to do a necropsy, I had to do both the butchering the photography. I have only butcehered one other rabbit so excuse my cuts.

My picture of the heart was entirely to blurry to use and I didn't realize it until editing; after everything had been sealed up and thrown away. The heart had some white streaking on it, but I'm not sure if it was just silver skin or not, it looks similar to the bottom of the heart in the Heart and Lungs 2 picture

Those lungs are VERY red.

DEFINITELY something wrong with that stomach.

The liver is dark, but I would expect that in a rabbit a while dead...

As i looked at your pictures I wondered cancer.. she certainly had a bladder full didn't she.. for a rabbit not eating....

The intestines look normal to me for a rabbit who has gone off feed.... excess air in the gut (from what I can tell).

She died sometime during the night, I am wondering if the lung color is due to the blood settling.

I am thinking maybe she got a hairball? she was shedding a bit but I put that down to she was actually getting the food she needed rather then a hastily thrown together diet

She was always good about drinking her water, the pictures don't show it that well, but when I first opened her up it was very clear, almost like looking at a ziploc bag with water in it.

Good to know

Those kidneys look huge to me. And with such a full bladder. Don't know off hand what would cause those things but that is not normal from my experience.
*Note I've only butchered 5 rabbits. But never saw anything like that in any of those 5.*
