I just did a little eval of my JW litters now that they are a full 4 weeks old.

Pedlars KK x Backwoods Double Shot:
1 black buck 1 3/4 inch ears
1 Seal buck 1 34 inch ears
1 sable marten buck 1 1/2 inch ears
1 siamese sable buck 1 1/2 inch ears
1 siamese sable buck 1 1/4 inch ears

Can that be right? All 5 are bucks. What bad luck is that.

Next litter...

Schults Good Shot X Back Woods Double shot: Not crazy about this litter. Breed to a different buck now.
1 pointed white marten buck 1 1/4 ears - not showable
2 pointed white bucks 1 3/4 ears
2 pointed white does 1 3/4 ears

Don't you just love it when that happens? (NOT!)
Still it seems to be a common probelm. Usually a whole litter of bucks when your hoping for does, and when you are hoping for bucks you end up with does. Fate is cruel sometimes........

I have her rebred to the same buck so now a whole litter of does would work just fine for me. :)

I am keeping the three with the shorter ears from the litter And keeping the nonshowable one from the other litter to see how they grow up. I don't really need the pointed marten but If he turns out better than the sable marten or his daddy either one I just might be happy I kept him.

It happens. Right now I'm on a waiting list for a shaded nd doe because all the guy is getting all this past year is bucks. He's got bucks coming out his ears and everyone wanting does from him. They sold 5 at the last show where we met them and he's got 3 more listed on the yahoo arba district list.

Of course that can be right. Happens all the time, just seems like all does is what never happens, lol.
My sheep had all but one girl lambs, never nice to see that many lamb testicles, unless you are needing a lot of dinner lamb.

My last few litters were like that, and the few does I did get were only good for meat. I was thrilled with this otter group, because of the 4 that survived, two were girls and three are showable!!

Thats great Sky. Glad you are having some luck come your way.

I am keeping the 4 with the shorter ears until they are 4 months. I am really liking the siamese sable with the 1 1/4 inch ears. He has nice parallel hind legs(no pinched hips), a great coat, tiny ears, a nice rise and nice shoulders. If he continues on this path he will be my show bunny.

Then again I have another litter of the same pairing due on the 15th so well see what I get from that. Does maybe?

And the pointed do is bred to my other buck. I am hoping for great things from that breeding as well. The bucks Sire took BOSB at Convention. He isn't that good by any means but maybe he will pass some of those genetics to a few of his kits. Does would be nice in that litter too.

__________ Sat Nov 24, 2012 8:55 pm __________

The pointeds are all nice and parallel, a few of the shadeds are a little pinched. I forgot to write down which were pinched. :(

I keep a little score card, for the colors I think they are when they are born (takes a bit to tell an otter from a castor, or an opal from a castor), what gender I think they are. Later with a new card or updated, at 4 mos I write supposed gender, color, and what I think of them. Next again at six weeks, and sometimes I split the litter into keepers and culls. At 8 wks, I check my card, see if keepers are still keepers and culls are still culls, then I cull.

So far the sable marten and two siamese sables dont seem pinched and neither does the marten pointed. So those are my planned keepers so far. We'll see what 8 weeks brings.

I am using kintrecks and I keep notes on the litter on the mating page and will start individual records on them at 4 weeks. (tomorrow)

I guess that means I will need to figure out my tattoo configurations so I can assign them tattoos even if I wait till 8 weeks to apply the tattoo.

I think I'm going to buy that little tattoo pen someone posted on here a week or so ago. No one gets tattood here before 4 mos, but the JW are so small even at 4 mos, that I feel the clamp is still too big for their ears.

i have an equitat and I am planning to order one from them as well. I saw it on FB but can't spend any extra right now with moving. But they will still be selling them come january so I will get one then.

I would like to order one of their needles and see if it will work in mine. That would be way cheaper. :)
