It turns out my buck wasn't so lucky, as he now has a large abscess by the bite wound he had when I got him. I don't have any of the necessary items to treat something of that scope so we are off to the vet this morning.

I am kicking myself for not looking him over better when I got him. He has had a rough time since coming to live with me - bite wound, molted to naked and now has very dry skin, abscess... poor guy. He's been a sweetheart through everything so far, but if he wasn't my only buck at the moment he might be headed for the stew pot!

Some of his poor doing may be a result of the infection he's dealing with from the bite wound. :(

Is your vet rabbit savvy? I know there are lots of concerns with antibiotics. I hope it goes well for him though, do keep us updated!

This vet is new to us, but yes, he is rabbit savvy.

I new something was up when Mister stopped using his litter box. He has always had the tidiest cage since coming to live with us and all of a sudden he was peeing on the floor! I found the abscess last night and it is even larger this morning so I made the call. I'll post an update after our appointment. Right now I'm going to try and clean up pee-pee feet before we go!

Poor little guy, abscesses can hurt quite a bit. No wonder he is acting out he is trying to tell you he hurts.. :(
Don't forget pro-biotic with the antibiotic to keep his tummy calm..for the dry skin I would give a little BOSS for the oil or just put some olive oil and water in a spray bottle mist him and brush/ rub it into his coat and skin.. white vinegar helps with the pee smell..Best of luck, and do keep us posted!! :)

Well, Mister is having surgery on the abscess this afternoon. I always said that I wouldn't spend a lot of money on rabbits and yet here I go...

They think his dry skin could me a bigger issue too. I declined the biopsy but we're going to try some supplementing and changing his feed. I've been giving him a teaspoon of BOSS every night, and I will give the topical suggestion from katiebear a try (that was my daughter's nickname as a child so you must be just as brilliant as she is!). I know the vet mentioned putting him on an essential fatty acid supplement. It's all swimming in my head right now. I'll get better info when they call me after his surgery. Poor man...

He can get the omega 3 &6,from foods..flax seed, pumpkin seed and soy are 3 and dark green veg. Parsley, swiss chard, ect are 6. Just google essential fatty acids..good luck..sending healing prayers for your bunn. :D

His surgery went well, but they are keeping him overnight because he had some blood pressure issues and they wanted to keep an eye on him. I can`t wait to get him home tomorrow.

I hope he stabilizes and is able to come home tomorrow :)

I haven't heard from the clinic yet, was going to eat my lunch and then check up on him.

Thank you all for your well wishes!

UPDATE: Talked to the vet's office and he is doing very well. He will be ready for pick up on my way home from work today!

He's home and eating and doing great! I have a pharmacy of meds for him for the next month as he is also being treated for parasites.

So...I am learning a lesson with this guy that's for sure...to check a rabbit over more closely before purchasing, but how can you tell if they have potential parasite problems? Are their certain things to look for??

:mbounce: Glad he's doing so well! :D

Parasites can be difficult to detect until the rabbit is very sick. Frequently, the only symptoms are things like... bunny eating a lot but getting thin, bunny just getting thin, bunny sitting quietly in a corner when it usually comes up for pets... stuff like that. :(

OK, well I guess that's mostly stuff you find out after you have the rabbit.

They said that they saw worms so that's why they're treating him, but he also has something going on with his skin. I wasn't paying for a biopsy on top of everything else, so we're hoping that we can clear it up by treating the parasites and changing his diet (after he's done his meds). This poor guy is a mess, but he's a champ and still so sweet (although perhaps 3 syringes of meds all at once are a little much...he was getting annoyed with me). We're calling him the Million Dollar Bunny now.

Poor thing. Hopefully, when it's all done and he's healthy and has fur again, he'll love you. :)

I guess they didn't have him on an angora-appropriate feed where you got him. :(

That would be my guess. She's not answering my emails now so I think she's washed her hands of it and is laughing at the sucker who bought a sick rabbit. Oh well, if that's the case then I'm glad he's with me now.
