After 4 decades of raising meat rabbits, I've decided to make an addition to
the rabbitry. Of course, it will be a meat variety that will hopefully bring about
faster weight-gain and earlier finish weights.

American Chinchillas.......I'm picking up 4 pedigreed sisters in a few hours.
The unrelated buck/s will be along in a short while. For me, this is a very big
step. I've kept basically two main breeds over the many years I've raised
rabbits and I've only bought ONE (1) papered rabbit in my life. AND he didn't
work out all that whippy. He always shot blanks....LOL. So that was my one
and only experience with "pedigreed" stock. I wasn't impressed to say the least.

From all that I've read, they've got a gentle laid-back temperament. That's
surely a plus, since I'm still dealing with that Looney-Tune Iowa stock I bought
a couple of seasons ago. I've got only two out of the original dozen does I
bought. They're "okay" but......for sure......not one of their offspring will be
held back for brood stock. Too....crazy to suit my taste. Not mean, Just NUTS.

Hopefully, the Chins will bring a new and interesting dimension to what I've
been used to all of these years. I believe it's time for a bit of a change.
40 years of white rabbits has become a little tedious.

Oh that is so exciting! I have a Giant Chinchilla (I think) buck, and I really like him. He is calm and very handsome. I hope it all works out well for you! Post pictures please when you get them all settled in. :D

Another 2 great breeds are
1 Flemish Giants: light boned heavy meat
2 German Giants: $200 from a guy in Germany, $1,000 from the breeder in the US. I'm hoping to get a doe I'm the next 2-3 years.

Ive been very pleased with my first trio of AmChins :) wonderful temperaments, great fertility, lactation and mothering skills.

I hope they work well for you.

Well, they're settled into their new digs. I placed them together in a cage for the
next week or so. It's easier to transition them on "one" feeder than it is four.
Plus being with their littermates for a few days will ease their tension from
being relocated.

I gave them a bit of brome-hay. They sure liked it. Made sure they have the
same type of water delivery that they had before. No "crazy-behavior"!! LOL
Just good old-fashioned nosiness. They're 5 days shy of 3 months old.

Well behaved little ladies. First impression?? I like 'em!!

Glad they're giving you a good first impression :) Definitely have to be more fun than just plain old whites for so long!

Took a pic or two while I was doing evening chores. Inquisitive little critters
that's for sure. They came to the door almost every time I passed by.

One thing about the NZW's...."favorites" weren't chosen by color.
Performance was the criteria they had to meet to earn a "special" place
in the rabbitry.

I think in a way that is a good thing, since it can be difficult culling one that you really like based on color. With whites, you choose based on production and personality...It could be worse :)

Best of luck with your Chins Grumpy!
The first rabbit we [the family] ever got was: An American Chin.
It was an easter present from a neighbor to my daughter
when she was five years old. I cannot go into it, but,
that was the start of Rabbits and "Crescent Valley Rabbitry".
It is a long story, but I feel that it was/is a good one.
After all, I am still messing around with Rabbits!
Maybe a Chin will pop out in the future.

Woot! Good for you Grumpy! I haven't been online much over the last months, just popped in to see how everyone is doing and find you with a new breed. I have Am Chins and Silver Foxes, couldn't be happier. Chins are easy going and happy buns, at least mine are. They've been outstanding mothers and my litters are making good weight. Have alot of work to do to get them where I want them but I think you'll be pleased with your choice. Looking forward to hearing of your experiences with them!
