After 4 decades of raising meat rabbits, I've decided to make an addition to
the rabbitry. Of course, it will be a meat variety that will hopefully bring about
faster weight-gain and earlier finish weights.
American Chinchillas.......I'm picking up 4 pedigreed sisters in a few hours.
The unrelated buck/s will be along in a short while. For me, this is a very big
step. I've kept basically two main breeds over the many years I've raised
rabbits and I've only bought ONE (1) papered rabbit in my life. AND he didn't
work out all that whippy. He always shot blanks....LOL. So that was my one
and only experience with "pedigreed" stock. I wasn't impressed to say the least.
From all that I've read, they've got a gentle laid-back temperament. That's
surely a plus, since I'm still dealing with that Looney-Tune Iowa stock I bought
a couple of seasons ago. I've got only two out of the original dozen does I
bought. They're "okay" but......for sure......not one of their offspring will be
held back for brood stock. Too....crazy to suit my taste. Not mean, Just NUTS.
Hopefully, the Chins will bring a new and interesting dimension to what I've
been used to all of these years. I believe it's time for a bit of a change.
40 years of white rabbits has become a little tedious.
