I have this beautiful mini rex doe. She is a broken black and white sweetheart. I went away a few weeks ago and when I came back she was in the wrong hutch. ( my pets have hutches, breeders have cages:) even better, my netherland dwarf buck was in her old cage. I knew that wasn't good and then I found out that she had been with him for half a day. He just turned a year and is fertile. I was hoping she wouldn't take, but I think she has.
So I have had her for 4 years and she hasn't been bred in that time. I don't know if she was ever bred. What are the chances she will survive kindling, or that the babies will be live?
She did make a little nest today,(due Sundayish) no fur though, I have fur I could steal from another for that pulled a boat load and her kits are furring out now.

I just registered to get an account, but I have been lurking for a bit now and this seems like the perfect site to ask!

Wow, that is a bit on the aged side to suddenly have a litter!

I don't know about the chances of things going wrong... I'd imagine they'd be higher, but I don't know how much higher. I'm sure some more experienced breeders will chime in shortly. Welcome to RabbitTalk!

If this doe is a cherished pet have an emergancy vet on hand to do a c section if something goes wrong!

Hi jessie,

welcome to RabbitTalk!

I don't know the answers to your questions, but I am hoping for the best for your doe. :)

It would be pretty surprising if she is pregnant since fat build-up around the fallopian tubes sometimes occurs in does that are not bred regularly. From what I have read here, does can have false pregnancies even when mounted by another doe, but they usually have nesting behavior at around two weeks or so, I think.

It does sound like she is on schedule to have a litter though. The fact that it was a Netherland that bred her gives you a chance at a better outcome than if the sire was a larger rabbit. Please let us know how she does. Good luck!

I have heard of the fat build up and I was really hoping for that to make her unable to get pregnant, but she is definitely big. Thank goodness it was only the little guy, heck if they do well they may evenbe good looking as she's a bit on the large size... I'm going with the whole "Expect the worse and you won't be let down" mentality for now

__________ Fri May 04, 2012 12:05 am __________

all you can really do at this point is play the wait and see game.

You need to weigh out how important she is to you.
You need to understand that even emergence C-sections have their risks.

She may kindle just fine and all your worry may be for naught. :)

The oldest doe i had give birth was 6.its good she was bred too a dwarf.

Crossing my fingers for you and your bunny! Any updates?

She has a huge hutch(8x4 given to me) so I threw in a nest box even though she has a little house on the back. She has one burrow looking nest in there and she made a whirl wind one in the box. She has been pooping in the one but she keeps the one clean.

Crossing my fingers for mama and babies! If need be I think I could foster them to another doe whose kits are a week old, but they stay in the nest still

__________ Fri May 04, 2012 12:43 pm __________

They would need to get the colostrum that is produced in the first few days of nursing from their mom, or they won't do well. Plus, there *may* be a big size discrepancy. I would just see how she does...she may surprise you.

Yes I know about the colostrum, but if something does go wrong... I have goat kid colostrum maybe that would work? I'm planning for the worst already. Thankyou for responding!

__________ Sun May 06, 2012 11:53 am __________

She pulled a lot more hair than my other does!
I can't figure out how to add a pic on my phone...

Well, she's waited so long to be able to do it!

Is she just nesting, or do you have kits?

Just nesting now, Im hoping shes popin em out now!

I was around the rabbits a lot today and I thought she was going to have them at noon! she was laying on her side with her butt up in the air and head under her feeder. Im thinking she was uncomfortable, as she usually just lays right on her tummy, but she is way too big for that now.

Im thinking about keeping a doe from her and breeding back to my mini rex buck, oldmamas got big ears, maybe that will shrink em down a bit :)

Went out in the morning- nothin! She looked happy not like she was uncomfortable like yesterday. So I headed out. My mother came to pick me up from my volunteering and said Addy died, but she had one healthy kit. The kit is pretty tiny,(little pudgy thing) but I'm not experienced with netherland dwarf kits.

So I am attempting to have my other doe raise the little guy. Her kits are 17 days old, but she went over an cleaned off the little guy and fed him! I just hope he doesn't get squished by his buddies!

I don't know that I would keep him in there with those big kits. Can you keep him separate and then hold her to feed it? Sorry you lost the doe...

Bumping Really old thread! The little guy made it! I gave him to a friend of a friend who keeps him as a cherished pet in her bedroom
