So my litter of BEAUTIFUL (and two reserved for a buyer already) broken red New Zealand kits is dieing one by one.

Found the first one just dead one day at about two and a half weeks and thought, "Oh well, these things do happen."

Found the second one on its last breaths three days ago and thought "Well now, THIS cant be good!"

The third is dieing now and it keeps trying to get up and falling over, thrashing its legs about and trying to get up again. No ballance at all and its eyes are mostly closed. Its not long for this world and my thoughts are unprintable.

So!

What can cause this age kit to die, one by one?

They are in a nest cage with fresh hay. Fresh water comes to them via a float and bucket watering system and they have fresh hay to nibble on. A full feeder of Blue Ribbon 16% pellets is available to them any time they are interested.

This does last litter is alive and well, from the same buck.

The poops look fine, so too does the doe.

Its late adn I am dead upset, this litter has the true deeeeep red that I have been trying for, as well as a really good patterning.

Any ideas?

At this age my first guess is weaning enteritis - which is a fancy way of saying acute digestive upset of unknown cause

is a necropsy possible?

A rabbit can have normal looking poops from their main digestive tract but their cecotropes can be sludge. If the doe is fastidious about keeping her kits clean then you may never notice until its too late :(

I have lost kits at this age before and that was my guess too but never this many.

The one that was dieing last night - it was too late last night to do anything wiht it so I left it to get on with it - is STILL ALIVE!?! I was going to necropsy it this morning but dont think I can with it still looking at me.

It is thin but responsive.

Will giving rolled oats to kits this age help them through this?
