These are my Silver Fox buck and NZW doe kits at 1 wk old. Some of them are brownish in color. Would that mean the NZW has brn in her background or will they continue to turn black and sleek like the rest. The brown ones are also rougher in texture.

__________ Wed Jan 23, 2013 4:42 pm __________

litter weight total at birth 10.7 oz

I had a Silver Fox x Am Chin litter that looked just like that. All black except for one brown agouti. It will remain that color.

The 'brown' kits are called chestnut (AKA agouti) and they actually look like they are steel chestnuts as they don't have very much cream/white trim around their ears, mouth or belly.

Any colour can hide under a REW. Your doe is likely a chestnut or steel chestnut but also carries the non agouti gene to have had black kits with your SF buck.

The silver gene is supposed to be recessive but I have heard of people getting some weird and wonderful colours from SF cross kits and their coats can change drastically from birth to adult.
