I have a large cage that was originally used for guinea pigs. It has a wire bottom with 1/2" by 1/2" wire holes. Is this fine for rabbits? I know that most people say 1/2" by 1", so I wanted to make sure it was ok.

How heavy is the wire? It should be at least 16ga, preferrably 14ga. Some of the 1/2" x 1/2" wire I have seen isn't heavy enough and will cut the rabbits' feet.

I have 1/2 x 1/2 wire that is 14g that I happened to find at our agway. I have it in the outdoor hutches that the beverens are in.

I like it because animals can not reach in to the rabbits so it is safer. The negative is that not all droppings go through. Beverens are fairly large. Surprisingly though most droppings do fall through so it is just every now and then I will notice a dropping or two that didn't fall through.

I also like it for kits as they don't put legs and feet through it so I think it is probably safer for when they first start hopping around.

I'm planing on getting a french angora. Do you think I'll have trouble with the droppings not falling through?

YES, you will have a problem, the close mess IS NOT a full 1/2 square opening, and the hair will clog it FAST
if you are going to use it with an angora, invest NOW in a torch and good long handled brushes

I would use it more for a grow out pen, the smaller rabbits poop will fall through. If you use it for the larger adult rabbits you will have problems but nothing that you can not clean.

Wouldn't do 1 x 1, that is too large, feet will fall through and injuries will happen.

I wouldn't use 1/2 x 1/2 with an angora, I agree with the others that the hair will be an issue with the droppings.

I think the standard 1/2 x 1 would work best for an angora.

Would 1" by 1" wire bottom be fine? Or do I really need the 1" by 1/2"?

I would only use 1x1 on the tops of the cages and it would be ok for the sides of the bucks or grow out cages. Not for the bottoms or for the sides of the doe cages.
