    Preparing for summer weather

People give their bunnies ice to chew on (you can freeze treats into ice cubes if you like doing that sort of thing). Just make sure they have good shade, enough room, and plenty of water.

    Warren Raised Hears Rabbits

I’m so impressed! Do you bury nesting boxes for the does, or do they make their own burrows? The coldest we got here this winter (so far) was -37° F, so I guess you get bragging rights. I did a conversion and it turns out that -40C is equal to -40F. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I didn’t see that one coming, but I...

    Hi everyone!

Welcome, Rene! Hows about some pics of your bunnies?

    Babies!!!

One of my two new does in my Suskovich tractor had a litter in one of the nesting boxes. They’re all warm and wiggly and healthy despite some fairly cold weather. The only way I could tell which doe was the mama was by the color of the fur in the nest. You won’t often catch them in the process...

    Warren Raised Hears Rabbits

Happy buns! So cool! I have to get mine out of the cages this summer. I have my four does (plus one, promised to a friend) in a big tractor. They seem to like it, but I really want them to have more room, esp when the babies start coming. So far, only one litter. I’ll be staggering the litters...

    Question about newborns

It looks like they might be just a bit premature. How are they doing now?

    New Guy!

    Thanks!

    New Guy!

How do you keep them from digging out, RWM? I’m planning to lay 2x4 fencing on the ground/floor (wherever I decide to put them), but I’m wondering whether I need to cover the entire area, or just do a horizontal skirt around the perimeter. I can’t do a vertical skirt b/c the ground is very rocky...

Need advice for new meat source

Last summer, I didn’t use a lot of rabbit feed (though I kept the feeders full for my grow-outs & lactating does). I have so many weeds! I just chopped and chopped thistles (thistles never give up). This year, Imma try harder on the sunflowers. Last summer everything but the three in the...

Need advice for new meat source

I found this thread on Backyard Chickens (which really should just be “Backyard Poultry”) Maybe it will be helpful. It’s about mealworms and soldier fly larvae. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/mealworms-eat-quail-poop.1159698/

Need advice for new meat source

It gets really cold here in the winter (usually not for super long, but still) This past (hopefully) winter it was in the -30s (Fahrenheit) at night. For a couple of weeks. Worst I’ve seen in living here for 30+ years. (Holy Chemtrails, Batman?) What would you think about a Cot setup in the...

Is there rigor after thawing when the meat was frozen fresh?

This last harvest it was super cold outside. I put rabbits or birds in a big cooler with ice as I process each one. Then I just put a cement block on top b/c everyone loves chicken (and rabbit, if they’ve tried it). The cooler isn’t to keep them cold; it’s to keep them from freezing. In warmer...

    Field peas for rabbits?

Yeah, no kidding on the prices! The field peas should be fine if sprouted (or maybe just soaked) or cooked. Like soybeans, field peas need the enzymes denatured by some sort of cooking, (maybe) fermenting, or sprouting will also do it. I believe the soy is parched to make it suitable for feed...

    Welp

It’s helpful that you have neighbors who raise meat rabbits, in case you want to go that route. I would have to drive clear across the state to buy meat rabbits, so… For some reason rabbits don’t seem to be a big thing around here. I’ve been butchering my meat muts and I have a large quantity of...

Shed and cages-homemade vs store bought

If you’re creative, you can probably save money that way. If you go with spec recommended materials (from my research), you’ll end up with lots of extra wire and unless you eventually use it, you’ll spend more on making your own than on buying pre-cut kits online. But, if you can find the cage...

    Vorpal rabbit

I don’t know… just my instinct, but if it were me, I would bury or otherwise discard the corpse. I’m pretty adventurous, but I don’t think I’d eat that rabbit.

    Butchering age

My doggies get meat for snacks & supper and lately it’s been rabbit. Only the rabbit is so much better than the chicken that I’m thinking they’re getting most of the chicken, now that I’ve butchered a bunch of non-laying birds, and will be doing more very soon, as the weather’s supposed to warm...
