    Culling aggressive doe

I whole heartedly agree with keeping friendly rabbits over the aggressive ones (there's never enough cage space for all the 'keepers' anyway). FWIW, with older rabbits we'd acquired, we've had success using their food as motivation. We'd go to feed them first, and let them eat from the bowl/cup...

    Age for breeding?

TL : DR yea, you can breed them 5 months or even younger and it can work. But you might choose not to, and the bucks might have trouble figuring things out. Usually this question is broken down into two questions: when CAN they, and when SHOULD they. Rabbits are capable of reproduction at 8-14...

    Giant Rex.

I agree with ladysown; the best way to avoid sore hocks is to breed/select for thicker pads. There's a Facebook group we joined while trying a similar project. It doesn't seem that active anymore, but you might find more info from older posts: https://m.facebook.com/groups/569754766489718/...

    Need Opinions!

Our experience is much like everyone else's. We tried a colony set up (which was initially unproductive), and really enjoyed the more 'natural' interaction with our rabbits. And the food/litter station (a plastic tote lined with raised cage wire floor) made waste removal a breeze! Some of our...

Help! Sick rabbit no emergency vets

Rabbits also have a high tolerance for Ibuprofen, so that can work for pain as well. We haven't had any experience with wry neck, but I've heard vets can sometimes get it under control (usually over a couple months with monitored antibiotics, depending on the cause).

    GI stasis . Help!

I'm sorry to hear that! We've used a couple tablespoons of oats a day to help firm up diarrhea. I've heard that help, and it seems to work for us, but it may have just gone away on it's own (ie not sure how effective it actually is). That can be pretty scary to deal with.

Bamboo, safe for rabbits to eat?

Bamboo is pretty safe; it's used in all kinds of rabbit treats (ie mats and twigs and such). The few people I've known to use it have all used it sparingly, though. I haven't used it, though. So I can't give direct experience or why you'd want to ration it. But from what I've seen there's...

    GI stasis . Help!

If it's just stasis, infant gas medicine works wonders (only requires one dose, but you can do more of you want; there's no known side effects for 'overdosing' it). If it's something more serious like worms or coccidia, it's a lot harder. We recently treated one of ours with antibiotics, but...

    Hello!

Same here! It's hard to pass up cute, and so we did a variety of breeds our first year. Many people enjoy having several dedicated breeding pairs, but we found it was more management than we wanted, so settled on just Rex (after trying and failing to make half then later 1/4 Flemish crosses...

    Way more males than females!

I've only been at this a couple years, so I can't give the stats assurances other people can. I will say that my broken buck has consistently sired 75-80ish% broken offspring with solid does (should be 50/50). That's only been across 6 litters so far, but all were 8+ kits each. So it MIGHT...

    Sad, Frustrated Buck

Checking her color (as mentioned) can be a pretty big deal. For what it's worth, a couple of my does make that stressed grunting noise every time they have snuggle time with the buck. And one of them has had 5 litters! Other does calm down quite a bit after the first breeding. In my limited...

Castor vs Castor/brown castor/chestnut in Rex

Yea, and that seems to be the consensus; reddish Castor breeds like Red. It's based on the Rufus modifiers, and getting the right amount takes a while (just have to keep the best and brightest consistently. Preferably from other red based buns). Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Castor vs Castor/brown castor/chestnut in Rex

I agree, test breeding will eventually get me there. And there's a lot of other color modifier genes. I was just hoping someone would know the genes I should be looking for, so I could do some more focused research. From what I've read on reds, it seems there's red modifiers and non extension...

Castor vs Castor/brown castor/chestnut in Rex

Hi all! I recently got a beautiful Castor doe (we named Ruby, after her red undertone)! I am absolutely in love with her coat! But it got me thinking about a "surprise" litter between my (black/std) Chinchilla Rex doe and Broken Black Rex buck. The babies were also 'castor' (some broken...

When to remove the nest box?

Putting does together is generally frowned upon, but the one time I did it and had kits they were fine when I removed the nest box. By 3 weeks I imagine they're hoping in and out of the box anyway. Hope that helps :)

What breed, please help! Seller didn't provide pedigree.

Looks something like an (alleged) blue NZ mutt I had. At the end of the day mutts are just that, though. It is possible they'd have a pedigree (it's just record keeping). You couldn't use it to show him though, since the pedigree would prove the rabbit isn't pure bred. And besides, when more...

    Help with injured, pregnant doe

Urine scald (looks something like sore hocks) can lead to favoring a leg, but it sounds like you checked for that and have impeccable hygiene besides. If her nails are longer, they may have gotten stuck, leading to a sprain (or something similar) when she jerked herself free. I've heard that...

Pet Rabbits - Would Bucks Cages Separately Fight?

Northern Nevada, As a (very) general rule, smaller breeds tend to be more fidgety and feisty. Larger breeds (like Flemish or continental) tend to be more relaxed. That said, I had a true dwarf buck that loved to be picked up and cuddled and a Conti that never really got used to being handled...

    What color is this??

That's a beautiful illustration, thanks for sharing it! I'll wait and see what my guy looks like after his next molt.
