Trouble dispatching with captive bolt gun (graphic photos)

Honestly I'm not sure how to describe it in words so that we're definitely thinking of the same thing. Basically my own problem was that I was holding the gun slightly too forward (toward the eyes), and too vertical rather than toward the occipital bun (the lower back of the skull, basically)...

Trouble dispatching with captive bolt gun (graphic photos)

I'm sorry to hear that you had so much trouble. It definitely takes practice. I had more success when I imagined the points of the X starting at the back edge of the base of the ear. The Bunny Rancher person I spoke to said: "The "X" envisioned on the head should use the back corner of the eyes...

New moms and dead kits - what's normal vs sign of illness?

Thank you for the advice. The nests are dry and clean of urine/feces but hot, as we're experiencing heat waves of 90-100 degrees. Could that also be part of the problem? I was just reading the other day about alliums and coccidiosis. I will definitely purchase some to let the moms eat, and...

New moms and dead kits - what's normal vs sign of illness?

I bred 3 girls at 6 months old. They are sisters and live in a colony. 2 kindled last week and the third this week. All 3 did a good job at pulling fur and making nests. Litter #1 (Himalayan): 10 kits, 4 dead when I found them, 4 looking weak and underfed, 2 looked okay. The living ones died off...

Brainstorming underground hutches plus colony living

Thank you for your thoughts, Ghost. I'm in California, zone 9. We get some heat waves of 110 degrees. My buns did okay - I gave them frozen water bottles and they didn't even lay next to them, from what I could tell. I was surprised at how well they tolerated it. On the other hand, one of my...

Brainstorming underground hutches plus colony living

Thanks for all the ideas, everyone! I don't think the pyramid shape is important; a cube or rectangle would be easier to construct. Having it lift out would be easier for cleaning, but that shouldn't be necessary very often anyway. If the food and water are placed outside the underground nesting...

Cinder blocks are a great idea for building the nesting area. Thanks. :)

Brainstorming underground hutches plus colony living

Good point to remember about drainage. Straw is cheap and you can encourage the rabbits to pee/poop in the front wire cage to reduce clean up. I don't think cement would be expensive if you DIY it, but I may just use thick plastic totes, as they they would be easy to sanitize or replace. I'm...

Brainstorming underground hutches plus colony living

I'm hopefully purchasing my own property this year, and I'm thinking ahead to how I want to house my rabbits. I just have a few meat mutts right now, but I want the ability to have a larger rabbitry if my goals change. I don't want to use typical cages because of heat and space concerns, and I...

Trouble dispatching with captive bolt gun (graphic photos)

GBov, do you use loppers that have straight blades? I tried cutting off a chicken head with loppers that were curved (like this: https://smile.amazon.com/Fiskars-28-Inc ... 000BX1IB6/) and the curve pushed the neck away from the hinge, so I couldn't get the head off in one cut. I switched to...

Red buck with "widow's peak" of darker color

More pictures! Sorry for the bad angles - I had to scruff him with one hand since we were in an unenclosed area, and couldn't quite see where I was pointing the phone. __________ Fri Feb 22, 2019 11:10 am __________ Looking at that darker front left leg along with his "widow's...

Red buck with "widow's peak" of darker color

I swear he's red in sunlight. Per the pedigree his dam is Aa Bb cchdc Dd ee and sire is Aa Bb C_ Dd eje. But I'll try to get a better picture of his fur tomorrow!

Trouble dispatching with captive bolt gun (graphic photos)

Thanks for your reply, Ghost. I actually forgot to give an update that a couple of weeks ago, I had an opportunity to use my bolt gun again, on an adult male rabbit. I double-checked my placement and made sure to point the bolt toward the occipital bun/supraniac fossa. This time it worked...

Red buck with "widow's peak" of darker color

I just noticed that my new red rex buck has a funny widow's peak of darker color. I checked the picture I took of him when I first got him a week ago, and it was more subtle. His legs also seem to be a bit darker. Is this just a stage of molting or growing adult fur? (He is 3 months old.) It's...

    Large capacity feeders

That’s a good point about humidity and mold! Fortunately where I live we only get 25” rain annually and the humidity is usually below 20%. Your set up is impressive! I like that your feeders go into two cages simultaneously. Very efficient.

    Large capacity feeders

Thanks! Those pictures are good enough for me to see how you made your feeder. I could also just make the top funnel part and attach it to my already purchased j-feeders. I hadn't thought of that on my own! :)

    Flemish giant x rex genes?

Glad I found this thread as I need to add a new buck to my rabbitry and figured I'd get a rex. I'll watch out for bald feet!

    Our first dried hide...help!

I haven't used egg tanning, but I can tell you that I have successfully rehydrated multiple skins that have dried stiff as a board (back when I had no idea what I was doing). You can dunk the hide in water, or spritz it with water and then cover with a damp towel and let it sit for a while for...

    Large capacity feeders

I'm getting tired of filling multiple J-feeders each day. This litter of 9 sure eats a lot. Are there any large capacity rabbit feeders on the market, or DIY options?
