    Dunking in water

I just saw a video of a homesteader who, after bopping the rabbit on the head, dunks this rabbit in water to matt down the fur. Apparently it helps hair balls and having stray hairs cling to the meat. Anybody else do this?

A step in the right direction, sort of...

My Dutch doe had a litter on the wire, last week. 6 kits, all cold by the time I got back from work, laying on the wire. She was a maiden doe, 1.5 yrs old, so at least I know she can be bred. She was bred to my dutch buck. I gave her a day off, and then re-bred her to the dutch buck. Today, my...

    The fairy has visited...

I have a small rabbitry, consisting of whatever meat mutts I have been able to get a hold of. My main cages hold one female dutch, a male dutch, a female NZW and a female Lionhead. In my growout cage, I was "growing out" what I thought was a female mini-rex and a female lionhead/palomino cross...

    Getting a little frustrated.

So I got into rabbits in October. Got myself 2 NZW does, one Palomino (crossed with "something") buck. Then I picked up a Lionhead doe. So far, I've had one successful litter, from the Lionhead doe. She was due yesterday, and missed. Should my NZW's miss this week, they will respectively be on...

    How do I clean wood?

I have had my 6 kits from my first litter in a grow out pen (an empty hole, 30 x 30 + 30 x 10 wooden nest attached). As I'm sending the kits to freezer camp, and hope to use that hole, I will need to sanitize it pretty well. I've noticed that, in the last 2 weeks, they have been using the next...

Freezer Camp - It had to happen someday

Well. I did it. Yesterday, I sent two rabbits, from my first and only litter so far, to freezer camp. I was surprised by a few things: -the broomstick method is a lot easier in practice than it is to understand on the web. -the emotions (remorse, mainly) are kept in check when the process is...

    how big?

I have 6 kits born from my Lionhead female (4-5lbs), bred to my Palomino/Flemish Giant male(10-11 lbs). Though not a traditional meat rabbit, this is still the intent for this litter. This is my first successful litter, now over 3 weeks old. I'm just wondering how big they will actually get.??

Additive to keep water from freezing so fast

HI, I use water bottles to water the rabbits. Is there anything I can safely add to the water to keep it from freezing so fast? I was thinking of maybe adding a teaspoon of salt, but I'm not sure if that would be too high of a concentration. your thoughts? GG

    ARGH!!

I went out this morning to check and feed the rabbits. One of my does (NZW), who was due on Tuesday, greeted me at the cage door. Weird. That's never happened before. I look beyond her to find the horror! The piece of wood I had given her to sit/stand on is all bloodied. No kits, just outlines...

    opportunity knocks

So here's a brief description of my herd, so far: Male: Palomino, 9-10 lbs. Almost 9 mths old. Named Buck. Female #1: NZW, approx 12lbs. 9 mths old. Named Top-L. Female #2: NZW, approx 12lbs. 9mths old. Named Top-R. Female3: Lionhead, approx 5lbs. 18mths old. Named Pumkin. Here's the...

    Feeding a nursing doe

HI I have a Lionhead doe that had 6 kits. The kits are now 10 days old. I read "Raising Rabbits the Modern Way" by Bob Bennett, and "Raising Rabbits" by Ann Kanable. Both books tell me that I should free-feed a nursing doe (or at least, that's what I understood, and have been doing. On the flip...

    Lionhead

Hi I wasn't sure about posting this in Rabbit Ramblings or in the Breeds discussions. Here goes: Is Lionhead an actual breed? The ARBA site doesn't list them as a breed, yet my local kijiji is littered with people getting rid of lionheads. If they are not an official breed, what mix gives the...

    Moving kits to outside

So here's the history: I got into raising rabbits the first week of October. Picked up 4 rabbits that I put up in individual cages that I built in my garage. Admittedly, these cages weren't well thought out, on the small-ish side and not fair to the bunnies. I've since built new outdoor hutches...

What day should they start making the nest again?

HI My first post, and likely a complete newb question: What day should they start making the nest again? I'll give you the history, so that it explains why I ask: I purchases a pair of does (sisters) on Oct 4th. They are NZW. At the time of purchase, I was told they were 7 months old. I also...
