    lots in sacks with placentas

Hello from the Midwest. It's been a really long time since I've posted. First time mama (angora) just had a litter of 12 kits. I was nearby and saw her make a great nest and get into the box. I felt she was taking a bit more time than average as I peeked in on her numerous times. Finally...

    What else besides Vienna?

I can get a picture if you need it... I have some angora rabbits that popped up with a small white stripe on the top of the head of half the litter. The sire is a REW and the the dam is a Lilac. Both parent's lines originate from the same breeder. This is the dam's first litter (I have both...

    Big culling day

I just culled 27 French and Satin Angoras from the rabbitry. Many of the culls were far better than stock I've purchased (and since culled). They didn't go to waste because we eat them, but we surely have plenty of rabbit in the freezer. I need to find a way to advertise some from the next...

    frozen pelts

I have 100+ angora pelts in my freezer. Can I take them out and salt them now? I can store them dry, if it's worth the trouble. But they can no longer stay in the freezer. Will salting them now work without compromising the fur? They were frozen within a 2 hours after removal.

    Lynx?

Satin Angora Dam is Aa bb Cc Dd ee Sire is aa Bb CC Dd EE This pair produced: 1 Black 1 Chocolate 2 Chocolate Agouti and I THINK 1 Lilac 2 Lynx I think I have pictured here a Lynx alongside my Chocolate Agouti. The "odds" have it better that I'd have a Blue or Opal in there.... so I'm a...

    weather

This weather has been such a treat. Beautiful Autumn leaves, the smell of the soil, the slight breeze.... I have to cover the alliums with compost and hay and trim raspberry canes today. What a beautiful day for it. And my young Satin doe had her first litter last night... Lynx and Lilac and...

    Progress

Some observations from the last few months. I re-bred a doe that had a small litter the day she kindled. The new litter came 31 days later and her 31 day old kits from the previous litter are getting along just great. Mom's happy, bigger kits are happy and still nursing and new litter is...

    Is sheen recessive?

Tell me about sheen... as in Satin, silky... I have Satins and French Angoras and one French doe I bought has always been shiny and silky. Pedigree is pure French. If any Satin was in the line prior to her stated pedigree, would it appear again anywhere? Would it be bred out? Or, could this...

    minimum characters for ear tattoo?

Is there a minimum? I'd like to tattoo Blue Willow's ear simply BW (she'd like that, too ;) ) Is this too short?

    pig ear tagging + rant

I am up to my elbows in work that needs to be done....in the middle of fall-planting all the garlic, shallots and perennial onions.... trying to put a roof on the barn before my animals disown me. But, because fall seems to be bringing nothing but panic this year, my car which ONLY needed a...

    34 day gestation

My FA usually give birth at 31 days, but lately they are going longer and longer. I palpated my Tort at two weeks and felt kits. But when day 33 passed with no kits, I thought I'd lost my touch. Today, day 34, I found two kits in her nest on my afternoon check. They are not terribly large...

    Shades of Black

The doe is a Tort aa Bb C_ D_ ee. Buck is REW Aa BB cc Dd EE. There's a 50% chance of this doe carrying cchd and a 50% chance she's got another copy of C. When I first saw this little litter of 4, I thought she had two Chestnut, a Black and a Blue. But, now the Blue is looking much more like...

    Allergies : (

I'm filing a complaint with nature: Why, oh WHY do ragweed allergies have to muddle my harvesting every year? :overreaction: Pick a cucumber, sneeze, pick another, sneeze, pick a tomato, sneeze, and another sneeze. I don't DARE go out to do the harvesting without hitting the outhouse first...

    Near Disaster

I've got a beautiful REW buck. He's not replaceable at this point. Better than all his offspring so far, so... He's my best stock. Time to re-breed the best does. I took my very best REW doe out of her hutch she shares with her 9 two month old kits. I put her in with the buck and...

Much too good to pull her own wool

Birch and Holly are two half sisters we housed together. They were both bred 17 days ago. This morning, Birch was making a nest (as for a false pregnancy). Not so strange... it happens. She just didn't take. But the stinkin' girl was not pulling her own wool! Noooooo-o-o, she didn't want...

    the nerve!

Some people! I have been communicating with a goat breeder for a buck that was advertised on CL. I still had my tab open with the ad showing the price at $200. The ad is nearly a month old. Yes, the buck is still available, when could we meet... blah blah blah.... I refreshed my page and...

I won't be handling kits for a while...

As usual I decided not to wear gloves when cutting up hot peppers. :t_oops: It'll be a while before I can handle a kit. ;) I've been cutting open the heirloom peppers to save seed. I've been saving seeds for 20 years and I've gotten it down to some very nice specimens for our valley. I...

    eye color and hidden color

In my rabbitry I have several Opal juniors out of a few different does and bucks, so they are not all the same lines... They started out with blue-gray eyes. By the time they got to be about 3 months old, (at least this is when I noticed it) some of them have changed to brown eyes. In the...

    Should I buy her?

Giant Angora doe. What do you think of body type. The wool is there... I mean, do you SEE that wool?? :P Not sure if you can see body type through it all, which is why I need your opinions. Too far away for me to touch and squeeze her, so I have to make my decision on photos alone - gulp.

    body type blues

I just went through my whole French Angora herd to evaluate them. Something I am pretty new at, but getting better with time... I have some questions about body type: In kits that are between 4-6 weeks old, will pinched HQ be evident? If I see them as pinched at this age, should I be hopeful...
