    Housing angoras outdoors

Out of curiosity for future endeavors... How well do angoras do in outdoor housing? I'd like to, at some point in the distant future, build a large outdoor bunny hotel for angoras. I've read mixed reviews on their hardiness, however. How well would they fare outdoors when the temperature ranges...

    The unsolved mystery

Hello, RT! We never did solve the mystery of the dying everything. We've had lots of tests done and no resolution. So we're embarking on an "experiment" to try to locate a cause. (Recap: we lost animals across several species to an unknown neurological problem. We don't know what caused it...

So we were going to take a break....

We have a pair of nzws and a pair of champagnes. It didn't last long.

    Animal tribulation: more dead ducks

I'm at my wits end. As soon as I put out one fire, another crops up. All the ducks were happy and quacky this afternoon around 4PM. My daughters went out to refill the waterer at 9PM and one of them wouldn't move. Brought it inside, thinking perhaps it had gotten chilly. It started up the way...

    Wool + meat linebreeding question

Rabbit genetics and linebreeding are still kind of mysterious to me. I'm sure it's been discussed already but wasn't sure what to search for. The end goal would be to have discernible meat culls vs wool rabbits that could be culled for meat if they didn't have desirable traits. Assuming good...

Debate: Don't eat anything with a face

This is a very long debate. I'm only 15 minutes in and haven't gotten to the part where they question each other. Expecting much anthropomorphism and pseudo-science. http://intelligencesquaredus.org/debate ... ith-a-face

Allow me to show off the agricultural corner of my office

The new ducklings. Not that we needed more ducks, but they were free. Woody is quite taken with them, and believed it was just toooo cold for them to be in the garage (in a large wooden box, with bedding, under two heat lamps). So now they're in my office, covered with a baby gate, so my...

Wanted: Meat pen or Angora (Rockford, IL/Janesville, WI)

Despite the horrific ending to our rabbitry, my oldest wants to give rabbits a go as a 4H project. We've decided on doing meat - Champagnes, NZ Reds or Calis - or English or French angoras. She's been doing very well keeping her lionhead/jersey wooly nice and shiny clean, so I'm fairly certain...

I need to harness the combined genius of RT

Our chicken coop/pig pen is +/- 250 feet from the nearest (working) electric box. It has no light. Today, we decided to cage up the laying hens to force them to lay inside the building (instead of wherever they felt like dropping out an egg in the yard). They need light to lay. Solar isn't an...

    Quail! Chickens! Ducks! Pigs!

I've got all these rabbits cages. Someone is selling Coturnix quail. You know where this is going. Please give me your thoughts.

Large, inexpensive (relative), rodent proof containers?

We've been ordering a lot from Azure Standard to mix our own animal feed. Much of it does double-duty as human food, too. Any ideas for big (50lb bag or more) containers that are rodent proof and people friendly? I'm considering the big metal Behrans garbage cans. They aren't water tight, but...

Equipment - all of it - Rockford, IL

As more time goes by, we lose interest in giving rabbits another shot. I figure in a few years we'll give it another go if we're so inclined, and I'll pamper myself and the buns with a new set-up. We've decided on getting a dairy cow next Spring, so the most pragmatic thing to do is sell the...

Double-duty homemade rabbit feed to chickens?

I've been reading up on chicken nutrition and have found that most of the "recipes" online are extremely over-complicated and/or made for confined flocks. I've been using the 6:1:1 oats:wheat:barley ratio that trinityoaks shared, and when some of it spills, my chickens go wild. When we change...

    Vax'ing chickens??

We're ordering a straight run of heavy birds for next year. In the checkout through McMurray, they have an option for vax'ing for Marek's and Cocci. It will increase the cost of each bird by 32 cents, so it's not a huge cost, but I've never heard of doing this before. Thoughts on either of these?

    I can't believe I didn't realize...

I just had an epiphany. That rock salt, sold for water softeners, that I'm going to use to tan hides? Yeah. That can also be used in an ice cream maker!! WHY have I been spending money on "real" salt?! Any other epiphanies floating out there today?

The junior buck we processed last night had received Corid ~2 weeks ago. Still safe to consume?

World War II Days in Rockford

Kind of down today. Photography usually cheers me up, so here are some pictures I took over the weekend. Since we were helping with pyro, I was allowed to move around the edges of the "battles" to get some good pics. This tank? Not supposed to park there. It almost blew some eardrums out...

Edited: I am taking a break from rabbits

We gave it a good go. We're having too many problems of unknown origin. I lost a grow-out today. 1 kit yesterday. 1 kit the day before that. 1 kit and 1 grow-out the day before that. 1 kit the day before that. That's 6 buns in 5 days. No rhyme or reason for the most part. One had to be put...

Pressure canning gurus - pumpkin pie filling?

I can't find any good sources for a pumpkin pie filling recipe. I've found a few things that state it shouldn't be done because there isn't good data on acidity and safety. Has anyone done this (safely)? Should I just can pumpkin cubes instead?

Kits dying, help ID'ing cause (graphic pictures added)

One of South's kits (44 days) had a wet butt this morning. I passed it off as playing in the water. Came back tonight, it was even worse and colored. Blood? Dark urine? I don't know, but it ain't normal. The fur on one leg is also partially rubbed off. It's acting normally (hopping around in my...
