Software for tracking meat rabbit data

Thanks! Do you have a link to the Colorado State PDFs you mentioned? -Wendy

Just finished my setup.... what now?

I'm interested in hearing what data you track, and how you use it to make decisions. I just posted this thread about a project I've started to do just that! -Wendy

Software for tracking meat rabbit data

Hi! I haven’t been around lately, but I still have my Californians. I wonder, what is everyone doing with their data? I have pieces of paper, index cards, a Google Docs spreadsheet… it’s not pretty. I looked around to see if there was anything available, and the software packages I found...

    composting rabbit leftovers

If I were going to try composting offal with neighbors close by, I'd probably invest in a 'compost roller'. That will let you turn the compost very frequently and get it to break down as fast as possible. You'll still need to experiment with the right mix -- maybe grass clippings or leaves or...

Red Enchiladas (Food Network Tyler Florence)

I was looking for an enchilada recipe that had red sauce and didn't have a ton of cheese. I found this one and tried it with shredded rabbit meat that I had cooked previously in the crock pot. It works great with rabbit! http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/tyle ... ecipe.html -Wendy

    Wire Nest Boxes

I use the wire nest boxes from Bass Equipment and their waxed cardboard liners. We get into the teens here and I haven't had any problems. (They are outdoors in hanging cages.) I put a couple inches of shavings in the bottom, pack the rest with straw, and let them redecorate as desired. :) I...

    ACK! Deep freezer got unplugged!

I have Thermoworks alarm thermometers on everything. In addition to telling me if something dies or gets unplugged, they also help in a power outage, so I can see how well the temp is holding without opening them and making it worse. Then I can decide whether to get out the generator or just...

    cages for meat production

My growout cages are 30x36" (by 18" high) and I need two for each litter. I thought one would do, but my does kept having litters of 10 or 11! Plus, separating the boys and girls makes it easier to select replacements, and eliminates "inappropriate behavior" if something happens and you don't...

Spice Rub for Crock Pot Rabbit

I just tried this recipe with rabbit instead of chicken and it came out pretty good. (Defined as, my husband ate it and commented favorably instead of making faces. We are still trying to re-train our taste buds to enjoy rabbit after having been raised on chicken.)...

    Best meat rabbits?

I have Californians. I was going to do the Cali/NZW crosses as grumpy describes, but for a back-yard rabbitry that produces *way* too much meat as you have to keep two purebred lines going in addition to the crosses. Even my four does and two bucks are really too much. -Wendy

Best gambrel to use for processing?

Can anyone point to a good skinning gambrel available online? (Yes, I know I can make one out of sticks and rope. I really just want a metal one for under $20 to magically appear on my porch.) Thanks! -Wendy

    Growout pen help!!

I would also keep them as separate cages. Eventually you will want to select replacements, and that's much easier if you separate by sex. (At least, my eyes are always drawn to the more substantial boys, and I have trouble choosing a doe from a mixed litter.) It will also be a lot easier to...

    Feed preservation questions

Getting the hay further up off the ground will help -- can you put some concrete blocks under the pallets? A vapor barrier (plastic) on the ground is good to keep moisture from coming up, but there is also moisture in the hay traveling down, and it needs somewhere to dissipate. I can't tell if...

    Really big litters

I had a similar "problem" -- litters of 10 and 11, when like you I bred two does so I could foster if needed. :) Overachievers! I had to build more growout cages. -Wendy

    Scream the Screaming Kit lol

I had some escapees after they pushed out the feeder, and scooped them up in a landing net (for fishing). Wow did they make some noise! -Wendy

    Grilled and marinated rabbit

We tried a Jamie Oliver rabbit recipe tonight: http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/game ... la-griglia It's a marinade of fresh rosemary, thyme and garlic ground to a paste, plus lemon and olive oil. The belly flaps are layered with pancetta and skewered. He even has you skewer the liver...

    So many!

... and again! The same two does, the NZW has ten and the Californian has twelve. (One is small and may not survive.) I thought the idea was to breed two does at once so you can foster kits between them? Not so much when they both have this many! I never did come back with pictures of the...

    Uneaten Feed.

I only have _six_ permanent residents and I won't coddle them -- I have too much other work to do on the farm! I provide plenty of food, water, shade and fresh air. If they can't thrive under those conditions, it's into the crock pot with them. I don't think you'll get much flak on the meat...

    Uneaten Feed.

Could she have broken a tooth or something that makes it hurt to eat? (I just had a meat kit break its jaw... probably chewing on the cage and got stuck or pulled back. I was processing anyway so I just did her immediately because she was in pain.) -Wendy

    Successfully shrink bagged bunny!

I do snap the hind feet sideways and cut the tendons, but the front paws and neck are problem areas. I use a pellet gun, but suppose I could 'broomstick' them afterwards to dislocate the neck without sharp edges. What do you do with the front paws? -Wendy
