Cold Weather, how do I keep my rabbits safe?

I don't blame you... I know they do have fur coats and we worry worry, but it is only for a short time.

    Sometimes rabbits are hard

We just lost a favorite doe when kindling. She was hurt inside and just wouldn't stop bleeding. This is the first time it has happened to me and I have raised rabbits for a good amount of time. At one point I had 30 holes so I do know... life and death happens. It is a part of animal...

Cold Weather, how do I keep my rabbits safe?

It can be wasteful but if you line the cage with hay, or straw they can nest in it (and eat it ) They will get dirty, poop in it and make a mess but it will keep them warmer. You can also give them a nest box with hay stuffed in it. Both of these ideas are to replicate what rabbits would do in...

    Doe's uninterested in breeding

Oh yea, I forgot to mention.... it seems as does get older they get wiser. They know that they will have babies if they agree, so they are "picky" about who, when and even where" Smart girls!

    Doe's uninterested in breeding

In one of the ARBA publications I received there was a chart showing the estrogen level in does depending on time of year. Very informative. As days shorten, the does are not receptive to a buck. Specifically in the months of Dec. and Jan it is quite difficult. Come Feb the chart curve rises...

    Doe's uninterested in breeding

They are expensive but there are electric heated water bottles. Only good if you can provide the electricity. We used a bucket heater and got the water moderately warmer than what comes from the well. After banging out the main chunk of ice then replace and fill. Lasts a little longer that way...

No A/C and wet summer problem

This is a tough one. Rabbits can acclimate but an instant change is really hard on them. A fan helps. Wet the ears it is one of the main ways they cool their blood. Wet hands, brush on water to get the fur damp not soaking... the fan will dry it and help cool a bit. Expect a lot of molting to...

    Doe's uninterested in breeding

It is rare but sometimes a buck's testicles will not "drop". This does occur in other mammals as well. There is more than one reason for it. Look up Cryptorchid. If your concerned this is the case bring the boy inside for a couple of hours. let him get warmed up. Pick him up about 6 to 8...

Thoughts about hay lacking diversity my rabbits want

I love the suggestion of gathering for your rabbits but PLEASE let it dry more than a day. Hay is cut, raked into windrows, dried on one side and then flipped over to dry on the other before baling. If enough is piled together it will begin to compost inside and create enough heat to start a fire.

    Bright red vent

I don't believe topically using penicillin would be a problem but I've been told only use Pen G. Or penicillin with procane included. Supposedly any other kind can kill rabbits. This isn't just word of mouth advice, I've been told this by 2 vets and read it in several texts that are aimed at...

    Too small to eat?

I love to jokingly say Take two, they're snack sized. And if your breeding for improvement or show "I eat my mistakes" I have a 12 pound doe and I find her difficult to get in and out of the cage. Being small and older (harder to get down low or on a stool) handling larger animals can be...

    Super mix- added supplements?

I had a batch of pellets that were crumbly so I saved the dust and made treats with it. I used flax, oats and blue agave for a bit of sweetness. The added flax seeds which when wet develops mucilage from the hull. It is a water soluble fiber so also good for the rabbit. I *think* chia seeds do...

How to age rabbit in the fridge after butchering - dry or wet?

Something to consider, dry aging is used not only to tenderize but the flavor develops better. The biggest reason I like to let the carcasses sit for 2 days is because it is dryer when I put it into a vac bag and freeze. I do think a wet carcass will be more likely to get freezer burn.

    Rabbit Dental Problem

A couple of things to consider; Rabbits have a very fast metabolism which means they recover from anesthesia rapidly. A vet, I respected and used with an elderly rabbit that was my pet, said that he would only use a gas anesthesia and kept it on until they were ready to bring the rabbit out of...

Homemade Feed / should I add anything?

I've been avoiding outdoor growing plants because of the Rabbit Hemorrhagic disease. In my area we have had it show up very close to me. Pretty much all around my home. Myxomatosis, Hemorrhagic, Wry neck, on and on. Those darn mosquitoes pass around all kinds of diseases. I've missed putting...
