A Black is not a black?!

White markings, like silvering and scattered white hairs are not at all connected to a base genetic color and can appear over any pattern.

Are chickens easier and cheaper than rabbits?

Cornish crosses may have a better feed conversion, but the rabbits are hind gut fermenters who can thrive and gain weight on very different things than chickens, especially meat birds.

How do we feel about breeding to a harlequin?

What breed are you working on?

My Two Pet Bunnies won't breed, not sure why not.

I'll try to answer in order the best I can. It's very common for does to be a bit larger than bucks, and most breed standards reflect this, allowing for heavier does. The issue might be because they have always been together, or there could be an invisible health issue. Separating them for a...

Standout breed(s) for ease of keeping a colony?

Instead of breed, it would almost be easier to look for a breeder with a pair of whatever-is-available-locally that already get along pretty well. I've heard mother/daughter pairs often do OK. I've kept both breeds, and I can share my experiences, but they won't be the same as others. Most...

    Genes behind the astrex door

There is an astrex facebook group. I'm afraid I didn't find it very useful when I struggled with my curly babies. (No one wanted to talk about negative genetic issues.)

    Oh, Baby Bunnies

Kits can have whatever their dam is on. I wouldn't give fresh grass to kits who's mother never had it, as that can cause enteritis and be fatal to weanlings. However, I start my babies right onto it if it's the time of year that I'm also feeding a lot to their mother. It has to do with them...

    It's been a long time...

I come here for peace of mind, mostly. All the drama and fuss and fighting, or nonsense answers you see in a facebook group are absent here. Just respectful people discussing things in a fair and balanced manner. It was really slow for a while, but it feels like it's picked up a bit lately...

    Urine smell on doe fur?

Nope, they don't spray themselves, and they don't go into heat. (Although they kinda cycle a bit, it doesn't seem to be on any predictable timeframe.) She might be sitting in her pee, but also, check to see if there is a buck nearby that could be spraying her.

How is covid 19 effecting everything?

My biggest fear with people impulse buying rabbits is the tendency for irresponsible people to dump them instead of butchering them. We already have way too much of an invasive rabbit problem in the US right now, and it's a massive contributor to disease in both domestic and US native rabbits...

    rabbit eating a reduced amount

It could very well be from the stress of the move, but what you are describing is GI slowdown, which could easily progress into fatal GI stasis, or even an intestinal bacterial overgrowth if left untreated. Get that little bun eating!! The best place to start is by asking the breeder...

    *UPDATE* Pregnancy Confusion

Having them indoors is fine if that is where they are comfortable. I believe the concern was that other rabbits could bother her during delivery.

    Anyone using Angoras for meat?

I find pretty much all domestic rabbits taste the same. The meat specific breeds are heavily selected for fast growth meat-to-bone ratio, and large healthy litter sizes. They will always be more productive, but at the end of the day, culls from all breeds find their way onto a dinner table...

    Anyone using Angoras for meat?

They are so gentle, it can be hard to bring yourself to process them. The raw truth is that their bottom dollar as a wooler is still generally a lot higher than their bottom dollar as meat-on-the-plate.

    Hello From Tennessee!

Hello from PA, my partner is a cali transplant, and I spent my early years out there, while my Dad was in the navy. I can't help but think the little pet bun for the kiddo is a great idea. We had a little velveteen lop as our bunny mascot when we first started. The kids and I adored her...
