Losing the desire to keep going with rabbits

Urgh!! Excuse me while I bang my head into a wall. I've been back into rabbits since March and have had 3 litters so far of Rex. Out of 9 babies that were old enough to sell I managed to sell 2. Went on a short weekend trip in June and a whole cage of growouts escaped and my mom and brother...

    Ivermectin and Ear mites

For an adult I would do a pea sized amount. For babies under 3 months, I would wait to use it.

    Ivermectin and Ear mites

Ivermectin is great for clearing up ear mites! I was shocked at how fast it worked. I had gotten a cute little Lop from Orschelns and he got digestive issues; diarrhea, then bloating, had a pot belly, etc so I dewormed him with it and after a couple days he was back to normal and hasn't had any...

To scruff or not to scruff?

I have found that holding their ears back, flat, and lightly holding both their ears and a little bit of pressure on their neck works very well to calm them down and move them. I can easily flip them onto their back for nail trimming by holding the ears with the left hand and with my right hand...

    Dirty fryers

Are they on wire floors or solid wood? I prefer wire cages because the rabbits stay cleaner since the poop can fall through the floor. I would make sure their cage/hutch is very clean and take them inside and wet the area where the poop is stuck and use some dish liquid. Towel dry and put them...

New to raising rabbits in Southern York County, PA

Hi! It does seem like a lot to learn, but really, rabbits are pretty simple and you picked the best forum to learn from. Best of luck to you! Rabbits are also very addicting!

    Hello!

    Welcome to the forum!

    Just starting out.

Welcome to the forum! I also separate mom from kits at 4 weeks, maybe 5 weeks. I have never had any issues and I don't see any reason to keep babies with mom past 5 weeks since they are no longer nursing anyway. You will quickly find what works for you. Raising rabbits can be done a hundred...

    What breed is he?

Lop/New Zealand maybe? Really hard to tell but he's cute and blocky.

How long after tattooing do you wait to sell your rabbits? Do you use balm on the ear, too?

I like using a balm. I have a natural balm with chamomile, plantain, other good stuff that I keep at the barn. It works great for my skin too when I get scratched lol. I have tattooed and sold a rabbit the same day. It's important to rub the tattoo with alcohol and a cotton ball after tattooing...

    Rabbit getting meaner

I would go ahead and breed her if she's at senior weight. It might mellow her out a little, or it won't and she will continue the aggressive behavior. I had one doe who lunged for my hand one time. I gave her a quick bop on the nose and a loud, firm NO! and that was all it took. I would not keep...

Growth on chin on my Rex

Do you have mosquitoes? It looks very similar to what I dealt with a couple years ago when I had rabbits at my old house. I think it's Shope fibroma. That's how they start out, then they turn black before forming a scab and eventually they go away and the rabbit seems immune to it afterwards. It...

    Ivermectin and Ear mites

I have only had an issue with ear mites one time. I had bought a Flemish doe and just a few days after getting her she had horrible crusty ears. We tried oil first, Olive Oil, I believe it was. That did nothing. So I gave her a pea sized amount one time and within 24 hours her ears were...

If...if you go on vacation, who takes care of your rabbits?

Vacation....what's that? LOL just kidding. I don't get away very often and usually never in the summer. I have my mom take care of them. The most I'm gone is 5 days and that was just one time.

Rex vs American Chinchilla - Any thoughts on which is better?

I don't know about American Chinchillas, but I had Giant Chinchillas for a little while and LOVED how calm and sweet they were. I wasn't able to breed them because one of the "does" ended up being a buck lol. I raise standard Rex and seems the normal litter size for most of my does I've had have...

    Hay questions?

If it's all you can find then I would just limit how much they get. Do you have an Orscheln's or Tractor Supply near you? I feed the compressed bales of timothy and my rabbits love it. I think it's $21 for 50lbs and it lasts my 11 rabbits 3 weeks.

    Its too hot

Frozen water bottles, bowls in the cages for fresh, cold water for them to drink, fans, soak burlap and put over cage, keep them in shade, add electrolytes to their water. I'm in northeast Arkansas and next week we'll have temps up to 104. Heat index up to 120! No rain in over a month and none...

    The woes of rabbit searching
