    Planting BOSS?

Does anyone here grow black oil sunflowers? Can you just plant the regular seeds you buy for feed? Learning that rabbits can also eat the stalks, I’m thinking it might be a good idea the grow, not only for the seeds but for the stalks as a hay. But are the seeds in feed stores sproutable?

    Red urine or blood?

Gave our does nest boxes last night as they are due soon. I went out this morning for chores and one was stuffing her face with hay and trying to pull fur, so that’s a good sign, but I noticed something red under their hutch. How do I tell the difference between red urine or blood? It was in her...

    Nest box hay

Too much calcium, which can cause bladder sludge and hurt their kidneys. I wouldn’t be worried if we were already on natural feeding, but the alfalfa pellet plus the hay is a lot. Just the pellet is fine, theyre made with ideal ratios.

    Nest box hay

Correct. They were senior weight, ready, receptive and everything I’ve read and rabbitries I’ve talked to all say 4-6 months, with studies showing if they are ready on the earlier end, for some reason you get larger litters over their breeding life, which is ideal when the purpose is meat rabbits.

    Grass-fed Rabbits for Human Health?

I don’t know about the composition of the meat, but I’ve heard naturally fed rabbits taste better. We plan to transition ours to natural feeding this summer. We cannot source organic pellets and I refuse to raise them on pellets containing GMOs for my family to eat. It seems naturally feeding is...

    Nest box hay

So, our first litters are due this week. We gave our does nest boxes tonight. The only hay I can source from farmers in my area is alfalfa and so that’s what I put in their boxes. Although, we are switching to natural feeding this summer, they are still on an alfalfa pellet currently. I know too...

    Noisy breathing

Thank you so much for your wisdom and allowing me to think out loud and bounce stuff off you while dealing with this. 😊

    New to rabbits

Something like that is definitely what we would do next time or if we decided to expand. I think this design is a great idea.

    Noisy breathing

Thank you, Maggie! No live rabbit will leave here, for sure! So since they’re likely all carriers, you think I should still try breeding the doe that did have snot and recovered, too? Or you mean just the one that didn’t have snot and only sneezed a few times? I do not plan to add new stock...

    Living together...

How long can does live together before they start fighting or getting dominant/territorial? Same question for bucks? I’ve heard they fight less? We will be keeping some litters past typically processing ages, to monitor health and the potential of them being new breeding stock. We don’t have a...

    Noisy breathing

Update... As of yesterday and today, there has been no noisy breathing. And no other symptoms. I stopped the GSE on the weekend, they are only receiving fresh oregano morning and night. I hope she has recovered and stays well, especially as she is due to kindle next week.

    New to rabbits

Mostly our hutches. I still really love them. We live in town so I wanted something that was nice to the eye but also functional. But we didn’t account for having to quarantine rabbits due to sickness. They aren’t just cages we can remove and put somewhere else. We’d actually have to take the...

    New to rabbits

I agree with Albert. You’re going to make mistakes and learn along the way. I researched and read so much for months and we just got our rabbits 3 weeks ago and already wishing we did a few things differently. On top of it, the farmer sold us rabbits that carry pasteurella without telling us...

    Noisy breathing

Update... I’ve noticed the last two days the noisy breathing getting to be quieter. Today, I didn’t hear it at all when I did the morning routine. So I think she’s improving. There also hasn’t been any white snot since that one day I wiped it off the rest mat, which was a week ago. I changed...

    Mastitis prevention

I’m wondering what the general practice is for mastitis prevention. The farm I got my rabbits from, the owner said to cut the does feed in half before kindling and then after she kindles to put her feed back up, to prevent mastitis. This sounds odd to me, LOL. Why would I starve her right before...

    Manure

Thank you! I was making sure it was safe for humans, but I guess that’s a good point too about it not coming back because I’d also feed the rabbits what I grow. LOL. There’s probably worse in the garden 😂 but this is new to me.

    Manure

Can you still use the manure of a rabbit that has pasteurella in food gardens?

    Noisy breathing

Lol! As long as I can make it through this without losing all my rabbits first. 😆 The waiting game is what’s the hardest now...

Need advice: My buck pulled fur & made a nest

I have no idea, but thanks for the laugh. LOL. Maybe he‘s having a sympathy pregnancy 😂
