Butchering Question--Resting the Meat from Rigor Mortis

Trick is to tug hard and fast so neck separates. Then it's fast, and easy to cut thru skin.

    Putting rabbits outside

Dana's book on colony raising suggests 20' for does and their kits, 10 for buck. Spaces will function bigger by giving them shelves , things to hide under, in, or on top of. They will cuddle together in a smaller shelter if given free access to a yard and more hiding spaces. Rabbit Warrens set...

    Not new, but returning!

Yes, but I use group housing. Those big waterers may be too big in separate cages. You could try the wide mouth jugs upended in bowl. Would keep them from standing in it. Drill some holes just below cap. Water level in bowl needs to be deep enough to cover holes and stop flow. A small bungee...

Butchering Question--Resting the Meat from Rigor Mortis

I too used a mop handle, but always felt a little clumsy holding a squirming rabbit, getting the bar and my feet in place. Someone here posted a choke chain hanging from a tree branch. I found some sash cord ( that stiff stuff holds it's shape) put it in a nice round loop. Hanging about...

    Not new, but returning!

Those orange cups look like what I ordered to start out because ads said they could be used for both rabbits and quail. Tried screwing onto buckets for colony and covey. Never did get them to stop leaking. Then went to wide mouth gallons with holes drilled near top, flipped upside down into...

    Hello from Kansas City

So funny and honest. Most of us don't admit our animals own us more than we own them. But so worth it. Rabbits have added so much to my life, I love them. Hope you get them home soon! Welcome

Rabbit meat cost , price for sale

When we got our first silver fox, the breeder shared she liked to harvest at 16 weeks for more meat for the effort and still plenty tender This has worked well for me. That extra few weeks makes a huge difference. This pic ( not mine but a great post) illustrated well.

    Chaos

Rabbits are very social when allowed to be. My bucks live with their does and kits. I've noticed even the bucks have favorites, will spend more cuddle time with one. I love seeing a buck and doe sprawled out relaxing, kits crawling over them. Sometimes making little bubbly sounds. I swear...

    Chaos

Maybe try a different buck. Mine live in family groups and control their mating. I had one doe , Cocoa Loco, who wanted nothing to do with the buck I wanted her to live with. Even up on hind legs boxing matches. She used to lay next to a buck in another pen, fence between them . I even watched...

Can rabbits survive 40 degree Fahrenheit weather?

My rabbits are often out frolicking in 0* and a blizzard. It was our record warm winter of drizzly 30*s that had them hiding in their shelter looking miserable. Dry and some shelter stuffed with hay

Studies on mortality in Easter Pets (bunnies/chicks)

My only experi My only experience is a neighbor girl who got a chick in her Easter basket. She had that bird many years. It would wander over and pick at bugs and fallen fruit under our fruit trees. A little gift for the whole neighborhood for a long time. I also knew a little boy who begged...

    Favorites?

I started out pressure cooking but have learned it much nicer slow roasted. I portion it when I harvest into hindquarters, front quarters, back straps,. Soak in a little salt water 2-3 days in cool place (my root cellar is 40*) to let rigor pass belly flaps, kidneys, and hearts are saved in...

    Worth It?

Perspective! Men are built for brute strength. Women built for stamina. I have read articles by doctors and scientists claiming in many ways women are the stronger sex...

    Worth It?

My hubby says you wanted rabbits ( and quail) they're your job. He tickles and plays with them. Did help build shelters. Everything else is my job. That means I don't clean fish anymore..his job

2 year old doe not feeding

My rabbits will eat the dried leaves too. My hay comes from a horse person who gives me the edge of the hayfield. It often has lots of raspberry in it. The rabbits love it and often pull the raspberry to eat first stalks and all

    Greetings from Montana

We were well over 60 starting with rabbits (and quail). Love my silver fox! They are so much more than meat. And the meat is wonderful, my new favorite. We keep adapting finding ways to make the job easier. Really enjoy colony raising. Buck with several does. Free access to their yards. Really...
