    Butchering Knives??

I like scissors. My razor edge quilting shears for slitting skin and belly, a kitchen shears for removing head and feet. A hunting knife for portioning, and hubby's fillet knife for taking silver skin from back straps.

    Claire, Snowball and Snowflake

I too wonder. In humans they claim having babies and nursing them is supposed to decrease chance of cancers. Rabbits are made to breed(lots). So I wonder if this is a bigger issue in pets?

new to rabbits and rabbit talk

???are you harvesting all 10 at once? I have always done one at a time. Dislocation, hang by back feet, remove head, bleed, skin, gut, and portion. Then walk out to yard and catch another. Think I'm doing good if I can do one in 30 minutes

    Fresh corn? Corn husks?

I don't give corn kernals or cobs but they go crazy for the rest of plant. I grow painted mountain, a high protein heirloom grain corn. Pull leaves occasionally, then when I harvest cobs pull plant. They devour roots and all. They also like the husks from sweet corn we buy for us to eat

    The solution to wasted hay?

Yes! I get hay from a horse farm. She saves the edge of field that's full of raspberries and weeds for rabbits and goats. My buns love digging to see what's in the pile. Colony shelters with solid floors, hay strewn on top. Softest stuff is put in permanent den boxes, sticks and raspberry canes...

    Smoke rabbit recipe please

I have never noticed any "off" flavor. When I did some much older does I tried boning them and ground for sausage patties, then made soup from the bones. Always let rest a few days to let rigor pass. ( Not for sausage ) I soak in salt water . I like to piece all my rabbits into hind quarters...

Hello. I am new to rabbit talk.

Howdy and welcome! I have silver fox in the north woods. I'm sure you'll have some teaching to do also. Always learning with rabbits

    Hello All,

Welcome and good luck. It only took a year for my trio to grow to more rabbit than we could eat. I have enjoyed them more than I thought. On the plate and in the colony. Keep the best of the kits to expand your breeders. if you choose colony , I only keep one buck in each family group, to avoid...

    Ground rabbit sausage

Rabbit liver is the best! Liver and onions for supper is my reward on harvest day for doing that hard job. Think people over cook liver and turn it into cardboard. Cook gently. You can also cook with lots of onion, bacon, and spices. blend into pate for cracker spread. Most recipes add lots of...

    How many chances?

I'd like to introduce Nuit. She's my super mom and looking a little raggy for it. I have family groups , each with group housing and free run to their yard. We had a really bad week. Thunderstorms and crow attack. Nuit's sister Cinder was found dead in the yard. They both had full nests under 2...

I'm building 4ftx4ft hanging wire cages for my rabbits. Has anyone ever tried this? What would be the downsides?

I think longer and narrower would work better.longer would allow them to hop a little, shallower will let you reach easier. Think I read the standard in Europe is at least 6 feet long. Maybe our friends there can verify.

Butchering Question--Resting the Meat from Rigor Mortis

??? I've never had broken legs. Or ruptured insides. A quick sharp downward pull separates spine. Head is easy to remove with kitchen shears when it's only cutting skin. Maybe you are harvesting younger rabbits and they are more fragile? I raise silver fox and harvest between 6-8 #s. 12 to 16 weeks

Hi all! What have you been doing lately?

Scary stuff! Hope your brother is on his way to recovery. . The heat makes me appreciate the 60* I was cursing today. They say ticks will be extra bad this year, even here, because of mild winters. Good luck and best wishes with all..

How to remove silver skin ?!

The jerky recipes I've seen use belly. I've not tried yet. I grind them for sausage. But I have found when removing diaphragm if I pull up towards belly most of that membrane peels off.

    New Rabbit... Name?

Beautiful! Since color is what caught you, how about Toffee, Carmelita, Autumn, Cinnabuns, Sandy.. anything that reflects that beauty

    Mature Doe, no Dewlap.

A couple of my silver fox pull from their sides. Nutmeg will make both sides bald and pink. She's my skinny girl so often looks quite raggedy.but she's a good momma. And a sweety.

    A foray into...goats?

Sounds like a dream. A little jealous here. I used to dream of ducks and goats ( I can't tolerate cows milk) the area we live in used to be hunting cabins and outhouses, but has turned into yuppie ville. Too many rules. They all have big dogs they walk down the road to crap but too many...

Hay - Where to Buy It?

I get hay from a horse farmer. She gives me the edge of field that has weeds and raspberries in it. The rabbits love digging thru for their favorite bits. I use same hay for bedding so pick out stalky parts and put in their yard. First parts they eat. Horse people don't want it but they still...
