Meat rabbit housing and some other questions

When I was dreaming of rabbits, I bought Dana Thompson's book "Raising Meat Rabbits in a Colony". In a shared space she recommends 20 square feet for each doe and her kits, 10' for buck, lots of hiding spaces. If you divide it would need more so they have room to move. You can increase space...

    Noise sensitivity

I remember an old book called "baby taming" it was written rather humorously but premise was if you make everyone be extra quiet when baby sleeps, you train them to startle and wake at every little noise. They advocated making noise, running vaccum etc. I used the same principle with the...

    Wintering Rabbits In Manitoba

I have jumbo pharaoh coturnix. I don't let the quail out. They are always in aviary and in better weather some in a row cover cage in garden. Tried recommended cages, but not for me! More fun to watch natural behaviors on dirt or litter. Before we got the back garden and aviary built, we would...

    Wintering Rabbits In Manitoba

Very nice! Tell us more. What kind of rabbits? how many? How do you deal with winter kits? Preditor protection? Who are "and friends"? Northern Wisconsin, rabbits fairly new to me. I only have a trio of Silver fox in a shared hutch with den boxes in an insulated box with lots of straw. They...

Need help from colony keepers. How to deal with winter litters?

Thanks. Your set up sounds like what I had originally planned. Then sister in law donated her chicken tractor which I remodeled and I built an aviary for quail. I had hoped the wooden den boxes, lined with cardboard and stuffed with hay, inside an insulated box (top, bottom, sides 2" foam...

Need help from colony keepers. How to deal with winter litters?

First year with rabbits. Have a trio in a 4x10 revamped " tractor" has undergone many remodels. Den boxes inside a 4x4 insulated box (2" foam) all stuffed with hay. Rest is also roofed, 1/2" mesh wire on walls. Windows put over wire for winter. Small door is opened daily to allow free access to...

    Gluten Free Pellets?

I too have celiacs and can relate to the long process of diagnosis and healing. I use Prince brand pellets they list nutrition breakdown, not ingredients. I have not noticed a problem..I just wash up well after dealing with animals, always a good idea. I have also gone to a free feed system so...

To scruff or not to scruff?

Sorry to hear you are having problems. All our wishes for a speedy recovery and better health. Small tip.. I found going out and talking to the rabbits and quail in the morning instead of sitting and watching news and stressing has helped me. And visiting rabbit talk feels like a little visit...

    Watch out for AR nimrods

Sorry you are having problems. Sounds to me like like you need to make some more noise. Why were paramedics nosing around to the point of being in your freezer? Maybe a case for illegal search and seizure? Keep us updated. This should warn all of us of the problem of most being so removed from...

Mom using nesting box as a toilet. Will this work?

Total newbie, so no experience, but I remember lots of conversations about mom feeding some poop to babies to give them the needed enzymes to digest their foods. Is that what your new mama is trying to do?

    Rabbits or not

Hi Kelly, sorry took so long to answer. Some rainy days and some busy days.baskets were to encourage laying eggs in one spot. I have 2. They prefer the one with dirt bottom. I have had as many as 9 eggs in there. The one where there is a wood floor maybe 1 or 2. Sometimes they all hide eggs in...

    Rabbits or not

I have the Coturnix jumbo pharaohs. The birds can get close to 1#, eggs about 1/3 size. Standard quail I've read maybe 1/5.Think eggs are a little richer, meat is dark. ( Some of the bratty boys ended up on the grill) if I can believe what I read they are supposed to have an anti- inflammatory...

    As much fat as possible

My attitude was always that the "christian" religions worked so hard at destroying those others that honored nature. Their attitude of all was made for us instead of seeing man as part of a system that deserved care and respect has led to the abuse that has us in our current mess. I wish there...

    Rabbits or not

I have to update my reflections. We have started with both rabbits and quail this year, so the learning curve big. To my chagrin discovered part of the big stink of the quail was my failure. A shelter at the back edge of the pen left a small gap. A bird had squeezed in and died buried in wood...

    Hay questions?

I read hay grown for horses is good for rabbits. A local horse ranch sold me a bale for $4.and told me they will have it year round. The local feed store was out. Ask for feed hay. It smells good and fresh. I add in a little of my dried stuff(herbs, flowers, leaves) for variety.
