    tattoo sequence ideas!?!?

I have tattoo pliers, so 4 spots to fill max. I also mainly want to know the doeline an animal comes from due to what i can or cannot breed together. So i use something like 1B24 for the code, 1 = number kit, B = doeline, 24 = year of birth. Since i only tattoo what i would like to keep for...

    question about skin color

I understand it can be due to molt?

Should I leave nesting boxes in the rabbits cage all the time?

The reflex to go limp disappears sometime around 4 weeks old when they are mobile enough (dogs & cats), rabbits don't have the reflex, because a doe cannot pick up kits that way. Other than that, there are connective tissues going from skin to underlying layers of muscle and such, those are not...

Should I leave nesting boxes in the rabbits cage all the time?

Predators grab from above, bunny just thinks its going to be eaten alive. Front opening cages are a lot easier for this. Other then that, keep them close to your body so they are safe and have no room/reason to wriggle, panic and try to get away. And while you can handle them, also keep the...

Does anyone have pics of an over-fat butchered mature rabbit?

Yes, older bucks hold on to their skins. Does let go of them much easier even at 6-7 years old. Mostly i try to put bucks in the freezer at 12-16 weeks when they still let go easy. Some kidney fat and a little on top of the shoulderblade is normal, more i rarely see. But fasting before slaughter...

Should I leave nesting boxes in the rabbits cage all the time?

Colony setting should be plenty of room for a nestbox (or 2, 3, 4). Bucks like all males will compete for females and right to breed. Your does may miscarry from that chasing and your bucks may fight. I'd split the colony and give each buck their own doe.

    New ducks need ID

I see difference in beak/bill shape, so could be a barnyard mix. Looks like the black one is close to feathered out, the others not yet. So old enough to do without heat, although i'd be carefull if the nights get cold. They still have a lot of growing to do, so feed them as older ducklings...

Your 6 week old will produce cecotropes, so sit down beside him with book and tea and wait.

    Hello from South Africa

I raise dwarf rex (adult weight about 1.8 kg) for meat. Pets are more selected for friendlyness, makes for more joy with care. And human fallacy it may be, animals that are likeable get better care and do better as a result. Size is mainly relevant for animals in the context of what makes them...

    Journey into quail

Other name for quail is popcorn birds. They want to hide under something to feel safe, some rabbit hidey boxes work fine for that. Height in a cage is not a problem when they have hiding places and is easier for access for cleaning and such. The jumping up is not a problem when they are kept as...

    1st time deboning

Deboning is fiddely, but taking at least the ribcage out saves a lot of space in the freezer. Result doesn't look pretty, but for a stew or mince it doesn't matter.

    Weaning Kits

They are not ready to be without their mom. Even if they can do fine without milk by then. Most problems with health from transition to solid and leaving the doe come from us doing so too early. Weaning enteritis for one and other behaviour problems later on. Same goes for young cats, dogs...

    Weaning Kits

Transitioning too solid food i.e. weaning and learning there is such a thing as NO doesn't mean kits are ready to be on their own. Any young animal has a milkbar closed stage and a leave the house stage. They are not the same. Learning how to be an adult animal is way more then stop drinking...

    Pinworm treatment

My rusty memory on waiting times for wormers says 30 days (sheep, horses), but also EU laws here and those are stricter on residues in food. Also if you worm animals you want to eat that means you want them to gain weight so they are worth the work. That means they'll need some time to turn the...

Are my Rex rabbits to young for a breeding colony?

I'd say 6 months is minimum for small dwarf breeds, standard are more like 7-8 months. Given the does age now and the shortening days your best chance would be to breed them coming february. Longer days and early spring makes them more likely to want a buck, makes it easier for inexperienced...

Rabbit meat cost , price for sale

I don't sell, market here is seasonal if any, bunny = cuddly pet, not food. If the grocery store has it, the price is around 25-30 euro / kg (=2.2lbs). But if i recall correctly that is hindlegs only, not a whole carcas.

    Doe not receptive

When it comes to neutralizing scent i prefer vinegar to bleach. Standard white vinegar for cooking is safe around bunnies.

    Urine management

Concrete is porous, so the urine would soak in, stain the concrete, it would stink and the ammonia will in the long run damage the floor. Even with woodchips or such the liquid would seek the lowest point i.e. the concrete before soaking into something that will absorb moisture. Here it would be...

Rabbitry Urine Management in concrete floor rabbitry

    1. seal the floor with a special coating or lay down some kind of vinyl plastic carpet material. 2. use pans underneath. Or indeed pick a building with a dirt floor.
