    Weaning Kits

In an emergency, like back-to-back litters, kits can be weaned at 4 weeks. If there is no good reason to wean now I would wait to at least 6 or even 8 weeks, personally I let the doe decide and just remove the bucklings at 12 weeks. If you are worried about the does condition you can supplement...

New to harvesting do these lungs look OK?

Yeah, looks normal to me too. I had some instances when some blood got into the lungs, inhaled blood with the last breath (oversized captive bolt gun), didn't look that perfect, but it doesn't matter. There is no way to poison anyone. If you just observe basic kitchen hygiene there is no risk...

    Been there, done that :D

    Is plum wood safe?

Arsenic? Never heard of that, but I've heard the theory about cyanids - because that can indeed be found in the stones of the fruit. But IMHO extrapolating that the whole plant is toxic is kind of hyperbole, like that apple seed scare. They are of the Rosaceae familiy too, I don't know of...

Dang, now I have to cage them all...

For whatever reason, this year my rabbits are destructive to my vegetables. For 10 years they left the Topinambur alone once itr was 3ft high -not this year, had to lock them out of the plot. And now pumkins. They always ignored them, not this year. So I have to cage them to save what's left of...

What's in your rabbit first aid kit?

Simethicone (Baby gas drops), Meloxicam(painkiller), feeding syringe and stuff to feed like Critical Care. A stash of dried apple leafs, nettles, and other yummy stuff if there's a bout of appetite loss. And antibiotic eye drops, but I can't get those legally without prescription.

    Oak and Acorns

Domestics can know what and how much they can stomach - when they had the chance to learn it. Rabbits were domesticated rather recently, the instincts are still there. Mine are free range outside during the day, grow up that way, start to venture outside the hutches at about 6 weeks, and they...

    Rabbitary Wipe Out

I had a Myxo outbreak in my first years with rabbits, didn't know what I was dealing with and it started when I was away for 3 weeks. Once I realised what was going on I tried to seperate the remaining ones, one in every room, but only one didn't catch it and survived from the initial 15. I'm...

Questions for people who use a pellet pistol for dispatch please

Hi, what's the power rating of the air pistol? Compared to air rifles they are normally rather weak, but if the pellet goes half an inch into a soft wood board I would consider it strong enough for the job at point blank range. I did prefer a .22lr pistol though. Anyway, practice with any gun...

    Water setups

Late to the question, but there isn't an easy answer. My two house rabbits, or one of them, drink more than the 7 in the hutches combined. No idea why. I chalk it off as an individual trait. About setup, I use crocks, with an electric heatig mat underneith for winter.

    Doe with swollen lump

If it is, like @Robochelle suggested, an abcess due to an injury, imho cleaning it out would be the right treatment. Which is not that easy, since rabbit puss is said to be pretty solid, and hard to remove. Medirabbit is a great site to get infos. I can't tell how I much learned from just...

    Doe with swollen lump

Although I don't have peersonal experience since that problem doesn't really seem to exist in my area, from what I read a bot fly would be my first guess, an abcess second. But that's really just from what I read, never had any such issues. It looks very big for a botfly though, but again, no...

    Doe with swollen lump

Hm, I would suspect one of several things, a bot fly larvea, an abcess after injury/insect bite got infected, or a tumor. Some more info could help to narrow it down. Is there a hole/scab in the middle of it? How does it feel, like, free floating under the skin, attached to the ribs, soft or...

    Butchering Knives??

For most of the work I prefer a small knive, 2-3", old knive with thin blade which is easy to keep really sharp. The long knive is just for opening up the rib cage, cutting the pelvis and removing the head. For head (after cutting around the neck) and feet I use pruning shears, and flat pliers...

    The solution to wasted hay?

The bars of my hay racks are pretty wide spaced, adding some horizontal bars did help to reduce waste. Now im summer I feed forage, and the grass and weeds are harder to get out of the rack, so I removed most of the horizontal bars for the time being.

    Is this even possible?!?!?

I would assume it's just a false pregnancy, quite normal. I do not think "breeding through wire" is a thing, although there are stories quite often kids or other persons had access to the rabbits, or there were other, more likely explanations. The youngest doeling I had getting accidentially...

    Baby bunnies eating momma's poop

Kits can eat whatever mom eats - they got her gut bacteria to digest exactly that by nibbling poo. The "don't"s are mostly about changing their diet abruptly, or before they are properly weaned for some weeks, but when they start on solid food that can be any reasonable diet. Never had issues...

    Litter size and genetics

One thought there, since rabbits are induced ovulators I would try more than one breeding first. Compared to sperm count the number of released eggs is minimal. Maybe he just doesn't get them in the right mood.

6 week old tries to bite me.

I have one doe, 10yo now, that hates being touched, and biting and chewing is her stress relief when being handled. She's the most docile, patient girl othewrwise, a great auntie for other does kits, not a kernel of dominance, get's along with all the others. Her daughter is one of my free...

    Mom aggressive to kits

Just be sure he's locked away safely before she kindles, nothing gets a buck more horny than a kindling doe. They do incredible things to get to them, and don't even wait until she's done. I had to put up at least 2 barriers I each considered safe by itself, my buck, or a doe too often got...
