    Lionhead baby colors

    Lovely bunny. Lionhead?

    Lionhead baby colors

I've not raised Lionheads, but I understand that the pink markings you see on the sides of the darker kits are a sign that these are double-maned rabbits. This lighter pattern should disappear in a few days, so you may want to mark down which kits had the light sides. As to the genetics, each...

    Anybody feeding acorns

I couldn't find any research on acorns specifically for rabbits, but I do know that for people to eat them, the excess tannins need to be leached out. Oak is full of tannin in bark, leaves and nut, and is generally recommended not to be fed to rabbits. Now I realize that my rabbits will happily...

Interesting colors from mixing my fiber line with the REW meat line

I have seen such bizarre colors when harlequin is a recessive to normal extension in an agouti. Bellies are mottled.

    Harlequin angora color question

Sure would love to see photos should the pointed white x harlequin breeding occur again!

    Harlequin angora color question

Exciting! Okay, so here's the question--did you see any harlequinization of the pointed white coat? Any mottling of color on the ears or points, or any other evidence of harlequin manifesting on the Himalayan/Californian/pointed white genetics?

    Close-up hair photos for banding/ticking

Thank you everyone for your help. I went back out with a headlamp, to avoid the satin fiber reflecting colors from the environment, and sure enough, she really does have black tips. The fiber spun up as a rather dark gray, she's a chestnut agouti after all. Amazing how the satin fiber can...

    Harlequin angora color question

I think the original question was--how does harlequin e(j) affect the Himalayan c(h) gene? There was a photo of a pink eyed magpie harlequin, which we found fascinating since Himalayan genetics have a pure albino white coat. So we weren't talking about the Himalayan breed, per se, but the...

Function of Agouti and Extension Genes - about Receptors and Pigment Types

Is this why rabbits with only one copy of e(j) are still harlequinized? Because the e(j) black fills in the agouti areas just like E(D) would?

    Harlequin angora color question

I'm sure looking forward to hearing what response you get, fascinating!

Function of Agouti and Extension Genes - about Receptors and Pigment Types

@reh , In reading the link to the research, I noticed something that seems to be cropping up fairly often--that the black rabbits are E(D) instead of just E. Is this because the Chinese black and checkered rabbits they are using just happen to be E(D), or is E(D) a whole lot more common than...

Fascinating. Would these be like the Lutino rabbits, with pink eyes?

    Is this a chestnut

My fawn rabbits are born pink, as newborns the fawns and whites look the same. The kit on the right is a newborn fawn: By the third day, the hair emerges, and the fawns show the straw yellow to orange shade, while the albinos are all white. By 1-2 weeks, the banding begins to emerge on the...

Modifier genes: where can I find more info?

Rabbitcolors.info has a link to Robinson's book on rabbit genetics. In it, he mentions furnishings (which he coded as Fu), page 297. I have found the plain/furnishings gene to be incompletely dominant. To test this, I mated a plain-faced Satin Angora to a fully furnished English Angora. All of...

Do magpies have to be Agouti?

Thanks for adding this, so fascinating.

Do magpies have to be Agouti?

There has been quite a debate over the best genetics for harlequin (magpie, brindle) e(j). Some prefer agouti, so you don't get the torted aa self smut on the face patterning. Others prefer aa so you get better banding on the belly and no light sections on the flanks. So yes, you can get magpie...
