Mom just sits in the nest box?

I agree with SableSteel, I just cant imagine the kits letting her sit in there, as they would nurse, or try to, if she was nearby. Its pretty much the only thing they do for the first week and some. If she has enough space to get away from them, then the box is too big. Shazza has a very good...

    Sexing Newborn kits **pics**

I have never had a doe reject kits because I've handled them, with over 100 litters and counting. I'm often there during labor, birth, cleaning of the kits, and during nursing. My presence has saved more than one kit. I've helped kits get going if they've been left in the sac as mom is busy with...

to soon for the new comer

Many diseases, especially in rabbits, you cannot see. That's why we quarantine. The stress of a move can make the healthiest rabbit become quite ill, and by the time you see it, you may have infected, and effectively killed all of your rabbits. Quarantine for 30 days, hard and fast rule, even...

    Farm Updates

You've experienced so much and taken so much away from all thats happened. That is awesome. In my experience, your buck with the abscess has pasturella. It can definitely show up as an abscess, and I had a litter where it showed up in two... and then abscesses appeared in the next cage over...

    Summer litters

I love those harlis. So gorgeous... I think if I ever added another breed, it would have to be Harlequins.

    Oxbow Feed

This is a GREAT idea. My colonies are notoriously lean, and although I dont mind the longer grow out for future producing does, I am glad to have found this as an option. What a game changer. Thank you.

    Oxbow Feed

That's exactly what my husband said, go back to the cubes. Ugh, I hate when he's right. But, I should. They're also easier to store versus the loose hay. Sigh... ok, off to go suck up my pride and go to the feedstore.

    Oxbow Feed

I've heard good things about Templeton, and I believe the Maki's feed it, and their rabbits always look wonderful. Since I feed alfalfa as a hay typically and not timothy or grass hay, I'm not sure I'd switch though, as I do worry about kidney stones and I figure feeding alfalfa hay is probably...

    Legal?

The USDA puts limits on the number of rabbits that can be sold without a license and inspection, and California as a state may have limits, taxes to be paid, etc as well. It would be best to contact your local agricultural extension office with that question. They can answer questions specific...

    Oxbow Feed

And as a side note, since most rabbits are raised on pellets and hay as a supplement, going to fresh vegetables can be pretty catastrophic, even with as little as 5% of a diet. Well meaning people have killed an untold number of rabbits by feeding carrots and lettuce without regard for their...

    Summer litters

Congrats and they all look lovely. I hate breeding in the summer too, but sometimes I just dont have the patience, like you said.

    Doe insists on 2 nests?

I had a doe that would denude her belly and up her sides as far as she could reach. I learned to shear her or try and get her plucked before she kindled. That way the wool was much shorter and less dangerous before I got there ti cut it up, and she didnt waste all that beautiful fiber.

    Rabbits Hate Water

I have to use oven mitts to check on her and the kits. They are 4 weeks old and she's just finally starting to let me look at them without going all momma bear.

    Doe insists on 2 nests?

My guess is that she still thinks the first location is the better spot. Is she feeding the kits in the new nest? If so, let her content herself with the nest building. I have does that pull wool for days after they kindle, some that pull little to no. Some that build wonderful nests, others...

    Best Rabbits For Wool?

Angora as a rule does not felt extremely well. Under high heat and a lot of agitation you can get it to felt, but it takes about 6x longer than the average wool. I have seen some silk and angora felt articles that are beautiful, but those that have worked with said it wasnt their favorite...

    Dogs??

Welcome to Rabbit talk. I have a 7 year old Weimaraner, named JD. A 6 year old Pit Bull, named Liberty and a 2 year old Cattle Dog named Scout. JD is the last of my Weimaraner show dogs. She is an incredibly dominant and intelligent dog. Liberty is a shelter special. I had seen her a few times...

    Rabbits Hate Water

Thank you. She's a good natured bunny, except when she has kits. Then she acts like her mother. :)

Stray white hairs or lightly marked steel?

I have a black doe that is just about to turn 6 months old. Her sire is a French Angora that carries chin and steel. The dam is a mixed breed meat mutt. (I needed a buck and the FA fit the bill.) Other litter mates are silver tipped steel and gold tipped steel. There are also black self in the...
