    Rabbit Hide Dog Treats

I just case skin the rabbits, put them on a hide stretcher (like a huge safety pin) and let them dry--away from flies. When they are all dry (in a few days), take a razor and cut around to form a "ring" of hide/fur. If you use a scissors, you end up with a lot of messy fur flying around so you...

    Just starting out.

American Chinchillas are what we have and they might wean differently. When we took the kits away at 5 weeks, they sometimes did well, but sometimes didn't (got digestive problems). We found that the local pet store requires kits to be 8 weeks old before they will purchase them as pets, and that...

How hot is too hot for hide breaking?

The price is WAY better from the garden store than the grocery store!!!

How hot is too hot for hide breaking?

You can get a large bag of alum from a garden supply source. 25-50# bags

How hot is too hot for hide breaking?

The slippage...right! I guess that would make for a not very nice fur! Well, I alum-tanned about 100 hides to make sure I knew how to do it, but then decided I might need to learn/do other things at this time in my life. During that learning process, I had a few batches that got slippage...

How hot is too hot for hide breaking?

This is great information!!! I am very busy with things besides the rabbits and I HATE the idea of wasting the skins. So, I finally discovered a method for drying the skins (without salt) that really works nicely for me: put the fresh, case-skinned hides on hide stretchers and hang them in a...

    Wanted: Pictures of Lilac Chinchilla!

I had three of them a few years back. They looked pink, so I kept calling them "pink rabbits". They made you look twice to decide what color they were. Unfortunately, I didn't realize exactly what they were until after I had used them for meat. (Yes--my leg is sore from kicking myself!) Sorry I...

    American Chinchilla coloration

That is definitely authoritative! There is certainly a lot to learn about genetics. Thank you so much!

    American Chinchilla coloration

Thank you very much!!! I am looking all of that information up. But just the fact that several rabbit breeders are familiar with this brassiness/brownback and that it goes away after the first moult is very encouraging to me. God bless you!

    American Chinchilla coloration

Fantastic! If you would happen to have any references for that helpful information I would really like to get them! Thank you, Ms. Temeraire!

    American Chinchilla coloration

Thank you so much for your input! The brown I am noticing shows up when the kits are very little (maybe two weeks) and seems to be only on the tops (as though someone spilled coffee on them). I have heard of "light sensitivity", but I don't know if that is the same as "grassiness".

Genes for blue eyes and Vienna genes

Thank you! Would the "c" gene in American Chinchilla rabbits cause REW kits?

    American Chinchilla coloration

Hello! Some of my American Chinchilla kits have "coffee" stains on their backs. I was told recently that this is called "grassiness" and will go away after the first moult. Can someone give me an authoritative reference for that information? Has anyone had experience with this? I can't find...

Genes for blue eyes and Vienna genes

Some of my American Chinchillas have light blue/grey eyes. When I get a white baby, it is a REW. Does this preclude the Vienna Gene?

advice needed on new born kits and doe in hot weather

I live up North where we have sweltering, muggy summers and bitter-cold winters. Our rabbits are outside in an open carport structure, so they have cover from direct sunshine and wind, but air flow. They have their young year-round in banana boxes filled with hay. The mammas add varying amounts...
