Just for reference, this is a picture of a chestnut. They will look like this from the nestbox.

I would recommend doing the cages one at a time. When you put them together, they can try to fight or mate each other. I would rather not take the risk.

I have put litters of rabbits in an open bottom tractor. I have only had them dig out when it was really uneven ground. They are now inside a pasture with an electric fence surrounding the pasture. No predator problems or toxic plants.
