This was really helpful! We also have chickens for eggs and had the same concern with those, and I hadn't been able to find anything like this. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the responses! I just searched YouTube and found this video that explains some of the reasons:
Watch "10 Reasons to Avoid Soy Products in Your Diet"
Again, many folks don't think there's an issue and I'm sure you could also find videos and research saying the exact opposite of...
Thanks, but we want them to get the complete nutrition of a pellet and hay diet. We'd like to venture more into feeding fresh forage as a supplement someday, as we have a lot of good weeds, mulberry, etc. on our 11 acres, but for now just trying to figure out how long we need to "finish" them on...
Hi! One of the reasons we raise meat rabbits is to ensure our meat doesn't contain traces of soy, however the only soy-free pellet we can find is from New Country Organics, and is around $40 per 50 lb. bag. We feed Manna PRO to everyone else (less than half that price), and the NCO to our meat...
Sorry you are having trouble getting babies. I had a few misses this year due to heat sterility, and I know it's very frustrating when the kits just never come. I saw you had another thread on this topic earlier this year, and it looks like you got some pretty good advice! I don't have anything...
We have a chicken named Cinnamon, and another, Nutmeg. Most of our rabbits have ended up with 4-letter names (Oreo, Lola, Rose, Emma, and Orca, with the outliers being Batman and Ace), so I might use Bean! Great suggestions!
Thanks! They are doing great, and no sign of splay legs. At 2 weeks, they are both already .8 lb, which is twice the size of the little REW! But everyone seems healthy and happy! I'll certainly keep my eye on those two for future meat breeders!
Welcome! Your rabbits are beautiful! I would recommend searching YouTube for videos on sexing the kits, butchering and tanning pelts, etc. as there are tons of good videos out there! I'd say at this age, it should start to become very apparent which ones are males, as you'll start to see their...
Welcome! Thanks for sharing your story! Sounds like you've had quite an adventure, but your bunnies look great and it's clear you really care about them! Glad you were able to make the best of things and learn to process for meat, make some sales, and adapt to the changes! I wish you continued...
I'd probably just wait and see then! Maybe try to palpate in a few weeks. I haven't been able to figure out how to palpate yet, so I hope you have better luck with it than me! And I hope she's pregnant!
Hi, KindRose! I've read the same thing through all the books and websites I've read about rabbit breeding and think it's a valid question. If it was just last night that you bred them and you aren't sure, I don't think it would hurt to put them back together today just in case, but I'm still...
His whole pedigree is black or broken black with the exception of one great grandmother listed as "white."
When bred to the two does from our original trio (broken black littermates - both also only black/broken black pedigrees, except that same white great grandmother), We got all black or...
Hello everyone! We're about a year in to raising NZ rabbits for meat. I've gotten so much info along the way from this forum and finally decided to join!
We started with a trio last August (black buck, Batman, and two broken black does who are littermates, Oreo and Lola), and have just started...
Hi! I have a one-week old litter of 4 NZ kits, and 2 of them are much bigger than the others. The two chunks are .5 pound already at 1 week, and the other two are .26 (the white runt) and .38 (the black, who is actually a foster). Everyone seems to be getting fed well. At least for now their...
Being very new to raising rabbits, we had a litter of only two and thought they were so cute, being so chunky and roly-poly! Learned the hard way that overfeeding of very small litters causes splay leg, and both ended up very splayed. They don't seem bothered by it and have just reached butcher...
