First time butchering yesterday. What to do with heads, ears, feet, tails, etc?

Hello! We are getting a new dog and plan to feed raw rabbit as part of his diet. Can you please let me know how you prep the hides as dog treats? Do you dehydrate in the oven on low heat, a dehydrator, hang outside to dry, etc.? What temperature and how long? How do you store them and low long...

    In need of tips/tricks

Hi, @Rogers92 ! Welcome! If you haven't raised rabbits before, my advice would be to do a lot of research! There are so many good books and websites, YouTube channels, etc. with great info (RabbitTalk, of course, has so many amazing threads you can read through)! You can generally watch through...

How old does a NZ have to be to reproduce?

Hi! I start breeding NZ does at around 5 months, and have succesfully bred bucks at 5.5 months as well. I would suggest planning for litters at any time from now through 35 days or so from when you separated them as there is a good chance they are pregnant.

    Venting

So I have some venting to do this morning. Why is it that just because people live out in the country they think they can let their dogs roam free to wreak havoc on others' lives? I go to put up our chickens and check the rabbits yesterday evening only to find that someone's dog has torn open...

    Calling those in Southwestern Ontario

Hello! I'm very fortunate to have a New Country Organics distributor nearby here in Kentucky, USA, whose feed doesn't contain soy/GMO. I pay $40 for a 50 lb bag. They offer shipping, but of course it would cost more that way. I've only been giving these pellets to growouts for the last few weeks...

Do you think this is Coccidiosis? And is the meat safe?

@SixGun Hi! We reached out to our county agriculture extension agent and he connected us with someone at a nearby university. It cost $80.00. We only took in the liver for analysis, so it wasn't a full necropsy. I'm not sure if that would have cost more.

@eco2pia Thanks! I was hoping you would chime in on this! Thank you for the very clear translation! That makes total sense.

What age to start rationing feed for juniors?

Hi! I was just curious when you stop free-feeding junior rabbits and ration their feed. I have a 17 week old buck and doe I am growing out to be future breeders, so I don't want them to get fat, but I also don't want to stunt their growth by feeding too little too soon. I'd say they are both...

How much Apple Cider Vinegar to give my rabbit?

Hi! I believe I had read to use around 1-2 tablespoons per gallon when I was looking into it. I ended up using 1 tablespoon per gallon for a while last year. I did see a very significant increase in little fruit flies/gnats when the weather was warm, and also little chunks of black sludge...

Water Bottles are freezing! How do I stop it?

Could you possibly post some pictures and info about your heated system? I've read about a few others on different threads, but would love to see what is working well for you. Thanks so much in advance!

Pink eyes (Unwanted feature) male, crossing with blue or brown eyed females =?

Well I don't know if Frost just had a really full bladder or my scale was off somehow last week, but he's down to just over 8 pounds now at 16 weeks. Still pretty good!

Questions about Willow Planting and Drying for Winter Storage

Yep, we're in Kentucky and they basically pop up along any fence line or other spot that doesn't get mowed down often enough, and then grow fast! I'll be chopping them for the rabbits from now on. I read somewhere that the invasive stuff has hybridized with the native varieties to the point that...

Pink eyes (Unwanted feature) male, crossing with blue or brown eyed females =?

Thanks! Looks like they have some Roughleaf dogwood (Cornus drummondii), Callery pear (pyrus calleriana), and wintercreeper (Euonymus fortunei) in that picture. It got too late in the year for the dogwood and pear not long after that picture, so now they just get wintercreeper each day as forage...

Pink eyes (Unwanted feature) male, crossing with blue or brown eyed females =?

Yes, they are New Zealands. Thanks! We're keeping that REW in the picture as a breeder because he's had the best growth rate of any grow out we've ever had! He's nearly 9 pounds already at only 15 weeks!

Pink eyes (Unwanted feature) male, crossing with blue or brown eyed females =?

I thought I would hate the pink eyes too, but lo and behold, we got a few surprise REWs in the nestbox and we really don't find them creepy at all. We think they're really cute! Turns out the black buck and at least one of our broken black does of our original trio carry the c recessive, it just...

    Himi Gene

Here's a pretty good site explaining the C locus of rabbit genetics: C-Locus I think the himi pattern is caused by a rabbit with ch at the C locus, either two copies of it, chch, or could be one copy of ch dominant over one copy of albino, c, which would be chc. I think for a himi to produce...
