Jerusalem Artichoke (Helianthus Tuberosus L.) uses/values- Report by University Extensions

I am on my second try to get sunchokes started. I laugh when I read the cautions. So hard to get stuff started here. My two year old bamboo is barely 3 ft tall this year. Hopefully the sunchokes will make it this time and not get eaten by mice or whatever it was.

How much do you pay for feed? --per mods: NO POLITICS IN THIS THREAD.

And it is so freaking unnecessary!!!!!!! But to counteract as far as my rabbits go, I am planting more willow trees and working on growing sweet potatoes. Forage R Us.

Alfalfa hay okay for adult rabbits?

What she said! If you want to feed hay and have room for just one type, get grass hay rather than alfalfa. If it were me, I'd go easy on the hay for the adults while the alfalfa lasts just to be on the safe side especially if your pellets list alfalfa as the first or second ingredient.

How are you keeping your rabbits cool this really hot "summer" so far?

It sounds like you are doing what you can do. My rabbits leave off eating in the extreme heat, that is not necessarily terrible though it is definitely heat stress. I think Silver Fox rabbits are gorgeous but I just want you to know in case you have to make a change, you are in the middle of...

How do I start to raise rabbits for meat? Any tips?

Make a short list of breeds you might like to try. Then set about finding out what is available to you within the distance you are willing to drive. Ask, as above, extension office (they are most likely to know folks breeding for show but those can be helpful too), at farm stores, look on...

    Thankful to be a member!

For anyone new to eating rabbit, I like recipes where the meat is cooked and shredded or cubed. Actually, this even helps me. I still haven't quite got past the rabbitness look of the whole rabbit or pieces. We converted several family favorite chicken recipes to rabbit and everyone thought it...

    Carmin in Kansas

Are you waiting that long to process because you are using the pelts as well? Just FYI, most NZ/Californian should reach optimal fryer size somewhere between 8 and 12 weeks depending on your lines and how you feed them, etc. My understanding is after that, they put on weight more slowly and...

    Ivermectin question.

I plan to get Corid in case of coccidiosis. I use Veterycin gel for random eye issues. I have Ivermectin for ear mites though I know i can use oil. That is it. Pretty much anything else is just going to get culled.

    Nest box Removal.

I turn my nest boxes even with the removable pegboard bottom. Sometimes there is enough nest to hold it up and sometimes I take a stainless steel zip tie and run it through the holes and around a couple of side cage wires. Love those SS zip ties. It's hard to get them as tight as a plastic one...

    Nest box Removal.

Nest boxes vary as to the height of the front side.

Hello all .. I'm still new here . Question?

At three months, the ***** should be getting pretty obvious so if you think they are does, good chance that they are.

Found dead kit 4 days early...more to come?

I am so sorry. I wish I could help. I do second what KellyBee said about moving mommas. I just had to move one but thankfully it was just "two doors down" and hopefully identical enough to be okay. Maybe you have been doing this successfully and this was just an off time. I know a FB group for...

    Need advice on handling rabbits

Had to separate 7 week old Rex kits by *** today and yeah, they are little kicking machines and the claws have gotten really sharp and strong at that point. I used Kevlar glove sleeves - once in a while a claw can get through but I find it easy to maneuver in them. Every time I don't bother to...

    Do you use compressed hay?

I asked you as if I would know that, lol, I would not for just the reasons you give. And my rabbits are crazy for willow as well. I have a 6 year old tree, a 3 year old tree, a 2 year old tree and I just planted another one from the nursery but also rooting cuttings. Beyond the Pellet indicates...

    Beyond the Pellet

Willow trees grow fast and the rabbits love it. You can grow it anywhere with microirrigation (it's dry as dust here but my willows thrive). If you know anyone with willows, they are supposed to be the easiest to root from cuttings. I am working on that now and I definitely do NOT have a green...

    16 new cages

Most of my cages are 36x30x18. I might put a whole litter in there right at weaning because my breed can be weaned at 4-5 weeks. But then I separate them by *** within a week or two which means typically 3-6 per cage depending on litter size and *** split.

Breeding a heat-tolerant line for Florida

You might want to look for a TAMUK buck. TAMUK stands for Texas A&M University Kingsville and they are bred especially to be heat tolerant and some folks do breed them right on through the summer here in Texas. There are two kinds and it can get a little confusing. They developed a more...

Hypharm genetics and a guy down the road

A breeder I know will move kits around when he has a litter he wants more breeders from and gets that litter down to 4 kits. I recently had a doe who only had two kits. I had acquired her pregnant and I moved one kit to her from another litter. Probably should have moved more. Those three kits...

Pellet round up for breeders (not meat)

Have you checked to see if any is available near you? There are dealers in east Texas. Anyway, to order you call and talk to Chris or email [email protected]. I was buying by the pallet and I have to order 2-3 at a time to make the shipping costs within the realm of reason. If you can find a...
