Forage-only diet; what if I exclude grain completely from my rabbits' diet?

I am in the midst of transitioning to a larger percent of forage and my rabbits are doing well and love it. Like Maggie, I don't mind if they grow out a little slower although at the percent that I am at - about 40% hay/forage, I can't tell a difference.

The New Safe Plants for Rabbits List

I agree! So my rabbits get the sweet potato vines and we will get the tubers should there be any (should be according to the vines but I haven't had a lot of luck with tubers).

Forage-only diet; what if I exclude grain completely from my rabbits' diet?

Thank you, haven't seen that one yet and I am always learning. I want to get to over 50% forage by next summer.

Do Rex rabbits survive cold winters?

It is west of Milwaukee about 30 minutes - kind of in the greater Metro area I guess you would say but at the time still had a smaller town feel. Oh we loved the Milwaukee zoo and the Milwaukee ballet. Lovely nice people.

Do Rex rabbits survive cold winters?

On the flip side of that, I have one Rex pair alongside my Tamuk and I would like to get another Rex doe but it is hard to find someone else here raising them outside. The people I know raising Rex here have them inside in AC. BTW, I lived in Waukesha for 6 years back in the 90's and one of my...

Hay Racks - what’s the point?

I need to remember this idea of putting it on top of the cage! Of course, it can be very windy here but most would stay there long enough. lol

    Do you use compressed hay?

Could very well have been a legal thing - like taking the route of not labeling it "safe" to reduce the chances of ligation. I was wondering because I couldn't see how they could be unsafe. My rabbits wouldn't eat hay cubes though I didn't try for that long. I imagine they would eventually eat...

    Homesteading in WV

We upsized from rabbits to pigs and cows, and while I am glad we did in our situation, if we could only have one meat animal, it would be the rabbits.

    Receptive

I hear you! My first "batch" is coming up Sept 16 and I am so hoping for at least 3 out of the 5 does to have litters. One is my best consistent doe, two are second time who did good the first, one has had two "failed" litters (blaming the heat, she didn't do anything wrong), one is maybe on her...

    Receptive

It could just be timing. There are 2 days out of 16 where they may not be receptive - I am not sure of the correct way to say it but the eggs are being replenished. You can try checking her vulva - best to be nice and pink and what I think of as floofy where it kind of splays out. Very light or...

    New Here and Very Excited!

If you can, source them from people who are raising them like you want to raise them, ie outside with fans, inside with AC etc, and in the same kind of climate.

Hay Racks - what’s the point?

Pretty much me too. And my daughter who helps me prefers to do it that way. I saw someone "catch" it in the door but she didn't like that either.

    Do you use compressed hay?

Not sure if compressed hay is comparable to pellets. It's actual hay, simply a bit more chopped up and compressed into a smaller bale.

What is doable in your perfect rabbit software? I've been looking at software, but I've decided to make my own.

Just FYI, I'd be happy to be a beta tester though I might not be using every part so I wouldn't be ideal.

What is doable in your perfect rabbit software? I've been looking at software, but I've decided to make my own.

Calendar part is most important for me. The Genetics sounds amazing! Like #8 - I downloaded the free Rabbit Tracker from Edelweiss and is what I use now. It would be great to be able to "hide" whatever I am not using - or at least it not being constantly in my face. I do not show rabbits though...

    Growout amount

Why do you try to keep the forage from drying out? As it dries out, the dry matter by percentage becomes higher.

Rabbit Cage and Supply Companies List 2022

Both I think. I have often heard it can take a while to get them but it couldn't have gotten any easier.

    Tamuk Rabbit Standard?

You see Tamuk talked about a lot because the people who have them love them and get rather excited about them not to mention being able to raise them outside in unrabbit-friendly climates. If I were going to raise, say, NZs where I live, I would need to travel to a rabbitry that has been raising...

    Tamuk Rabbit Standard?

Some other info I have on file: Tamuks vs Composites. Tamuks are all white, which meets the majority of the commercial processors requirements. Composites are made up of a bunch of different breeds, so it is like a bubble gum machine to find out what colors you will have from these. We are...
