This is a doe that is a little over a year old. We had about 4 breedings that resulted in one litter. Thru the cold spell last week she noticably lost condition, lost weight and fur condition. Still eating and drinking fine. She was supposed to be bred but it was another failed breeding. So i culled her this morning.

Has anyone seen a liver like this? Its much smaller than normal and the bile duct is grossly enlarged and no longer nestled in the lobe. The second pic is the lungs which seems pale to me. Her heart is also smaller than my nz hearts.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Oh, she also had more internal fat than ive ever seen in any of my rabbits. Same diet. I rarely feed treats and she was finicky and never ate anything but her nutrena pellets. Didn't even care for hay.

That does kind of look like extensive hepatic coccidiosis to me. Usually I see coccidiosis before the infection has spread to the whole liver and at that point the liver is greatly distended. But I think as the infection progresses, the liver begins to atrophy as it loses the battle to defeat the Eimeria and detox the body.

Here is a photo quite similar to yours, with extensive nodules and a hugely enlarged bile duct, in a rabbit with hepatic coccidiosis. The paper describes an investigation of the use of Litchi chinensis (no common name that I know of) to treat hepatic coccidiosis in rabbits:

I think @ladysown's idea of looking at Rabbits Inside Out is an idea, if you use Facebook (I don't).

I did see that and it gave me pause!

She had what I'd call a fussy tummy from the time i got her...for instance kale (fed in tiny treat portions every once in awhile) or dandelion...anything like that would cause a loose stool for the afternoon and the rest of the time she had really more hard pellets than my other rabbits.

I don't know where she would have gotten it. The place i bought her from has an immaculate set up tho they do put them on the grass for fun time. At my place she was quarantined for 4 weeks then in her own cage off the ground etc.

But i can find nothing else that appears even close.

Id considered using the meat for my dog...but i dont know if i should.
Thanks for your response.

That's the Lychee - I don't know if you're familiar with the fruit, but we get them here in the UK, imported (not sure where from*). It originated in China and is grown in South Asia, India and the Caribbean. Apparently there are cultivars which will grow in the USA.

*Edit: apparently we get them from Israel, Madagascar, Mexico, Mozambique, South Africa and Vietnam.
