I keep my rabbits like cats, they can get out free roam when I'm at home, out on the meadow, forest, whatever they like. Just without the "killing birds" part cats do. They were cautious enough to stay clear of the street. Not much traffic anyway, mayby 20 cars per day. This worked for 10 years now. Today was a local election, so there were hundreds of cars, and since the election is in the local pub I reckon quite some of those leaving were not sober, uhm, no, don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming anyone. The fault is mine.

Today my future breeding doe managed to run into a car, found her dead on the street, still warm, no obvious injuries. I planned to cut back on breeding a little, and this doe I intended to keep was a headstrong, smart gal, just got horny these days and went to the front gate to see the -by now neutered - buck. Must have got spooked and ran into a car.

Dang. I was hoping to get at least some litters from her, keeping my herd somewhat colourful. What's left is my old doe, which I can't breed for for future keepers because she seems to develope the same spine issues like her father, and then there is that one black doeling that just escaped the freezer because I thought she might be pregnant.

Seems like I need more fences. I always worried about foxes and marten when I let my rabbits out, cars, I really thought they are too smart for that.
So I'm down to 6 rabbits, My two house rabbits, both neutered, then Red, a 11 yo spayed doe, Ruth, about 5yo but with that spine issue and not a stellar record with her last litters - Hansi, my new buck, a joy to have around, and that one black doe that just escaped the freezer because I thought she was pregnant.
That's a pretty thin rope there.

The main reason why I have rabbits is not meat, or having company, but having responsibility, somehing I have to care for, can't throw in the towel on an impulse that way, They are a safeguard. Feeling really bad today.

Such a bummer! It's one of those things you wish you could just re-wind.

Do I remember correctly that Hansi is a chestnut? Lots of colors and patterns can hide in that variety. Maybe you'll get more variety than you expect from him and the black doe...

I hope so, he's an agouti. Tort could be hiding in that black doe 50/50 chance. Anyway, that's not thre real issue.

What hurts is that Pipi was just so smart, she understood what I was telling her, like, "go home", and when I came 15 minutes later to check she was home. Battled her escapism the whole summer, and she just outsmarted me over and over again, until we got to the agreement that I tell her what to do, and she had some time think about it. That was just such a rare, strong character.

Years ago I had a Dwarf Lop doe - an intelligent breed, size between a Holland and a US Mini - who had free run of the garden. The postman left the front gate open and she ran into the road and was hit by a car :(

I'm so sorry <3 I have a girl, Morgan, who is just like that. We call her the personality hire because she's wickedly intelligent and is always about the shenanigans. Those strong-willed ones are so rare and unfortunately are the most likely to get themselves into predicaments. I hope you find a bun to fill that void.

So sorry for your rabbit!

I'm curious if you bring the rabbits in at night? I would love to do that, but they would have to be locked up at night we have LOTS of coyotes. They wouldn't last long.

If you bring them in, how do you get them? Do they come? Mine don't come when called LOL. I had a buck that I wasn't breeding so let him be a yard rabbit catching him at night to put back in his cage. It only took 2 days for him to decide he wasn't going to be caught anymore. Finally got him after a couple more days, so he doesn't get out anymore :(

I know our cottontails are a different species than the European ones that people keep as domestics, but we have dead rabbits on our streets all the time... and squirrels... and cat and dogs which are debatably smarter than a rabbit of either species. Roads are just hard for animals to understand.

I'm sorry you lost her and hope that black doe gets you back on track.

Oh, how life is annoying sometimes! It's such a bummer when things happen like this.

Sounds like a nice life for your buns. How do you get them to come back? Thought I was doing good letting free access between their group housing and yards. The yards are surrounded by 6' perimeter fence. (4 ' between yards) And ground has buried fencing to keep them from tunneling out and others from tunneling in.

Hello, sorry that happened to your sweet girl. I let my two out to roam and I know that is a chance we take in letting them out.

Yes! Wanted rabbits for the meat and company, but as my arthritis gets worse they are what keeps me moving. One foot in front of the other. My babies need taking care of! Sorry for your loss. It's hard to not get attached to those smarties.
