Rex -
Dad is Chinchilla, carries dilute and self
Mom is Castor, carries dilute and chin
I don’t know any other genetics.

This little guy is just over 2 weeks old. I originally thought it was castor, but then the grey sides showed up. They had 11 in this litter, three are opal, one castor, six chinchilla and then this guy.

The parents are from reputable breeders who show their rabbits. However - I bought them without pedigrees because I wasn’t interested in showing. The longer I have them, the more I want to learn about genetics and colours though. Funny how that goes.

Anyway, thanks in advance for your help!

Your original thought was right. Castor (and other agouti colors including red) have what I think of as "racing stripes." It follows the shorter hairs on the flanks; it's actually pretty close to the same pattern, only in reverse, that you see on torts.

Castors (chestnuts, coppers, etc.) vary in their hue and some are more obvious than others. It also seems to be more obvious at certain ages.

Here are castor and red Mini Rex, as well as a chinchilla Mini Rex (false dwarf doe) and a red Satin, which all show the same pattern to various degrees. It's not a DQ or even a fault in either breed (all of the castor Mini Rex below were Grand Champions).
