Happy buns! So cool! I have to get mine out of the cages this summer. I have my four does (plus one, promised to a friend) in a big tractor. They seem to like it, but I really want them to have more room, esp when the babies start coming. So far, only one litter. I’ll be staggering the litters so they don’t get too crowded.

The bucks are in big cages in the barn. I’m wondering whether you keep the bucks and does together and just let them figure out the timing on their own, or are you more involved in who mates with whom, and when?

It was -40 this January when I saw my first kits emerge from the hole and venture out onto the snow. Rabbits are tough animals especially if they have what they need to successful. My buck is always with the heard. The does control the breeding they just won’t lift for him. My older non breeding does stay in the heard for stability, plus they have earned their keep. I have 8 does and one buck.

I’m so impressed! Do you bury nesting boxes for the does, or do they make their own burrows? The coldest we got here this winter (so far) was -37° F, so I guess you get bragging rights. I did a conversion and it turns out that -40C is equal to -40F. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I didn’t see that one coming, but I guess they’ve got to match at some point.

I was thinking I might bury totes with hardware cloth bottoms and run French drain down to a hole in the totes for entry tunnels. Do you think that would work okay?

I used square straw bales to make the walls leaving a small gap for the buns to access, then just put lids on like full sheets of plywood. I do have some totes with holes the does could nest in but they prefer their own holes to have their kits in.
