Hey all. I'm in the Chicago suburbs looking to get started in raising some meat rabbits. I've got a nice space and bought all of the supplies I'll need, I just need to find some rabbits. Finding breeders online has proven to be a lot more challenging than I expected. I'm looking for Blanc de Hotot rabbits (1 buck, 2 does, not dwarf) but I'm open to other breeds if I can't find any.

Welcome to the forum! Finding Blanc de Hotot rabbits would be challenging here too. Did you check out the arba breeders list? Any rabbit shows listed in your area? I've only seen pictures. What are your back up breeds?

Oh, I love the Blanc de Hotot breed. When I was little I showed them at our local fair. I think it's so neat that they have eyeliner it's what makes them special. My Mom wants to get some again. But we stopped with them because we found that they got scared easily and broke their backs a lot. We also found that their stomach was not very strong. But this could be because of us being new to the breed. If you are looking for a meat breed I would recommend Silver Fox, New Zealand, Blanc de Hotot, Flemish giants (if you are willing to try such a big breed), California, Champagne D’Argent, American Chinchilla, Standard Rex(if you want one with soft fur), Cinnamon, and Satin. I would look on ARBA's website to see if there are any breeders near you. Look on ARBA to see if there is a rabbit show near you that can give you an idea of who is doing what in your area.
