Hi - we are chicken farmers but have branched out into meat rabbits. We have purchased several rabbits at auctions and were told they were New Zealand - however after continuing to research I am not sure their colorings fit... Any help would be super!!

When color-crossed, new zealands often make unshowable color varieties. Unfortunately, there is also a trend for people to label just about any meat type as a "new zealand" to sell them.

Either way, I'm afraid the rabbits you have would not be of too much use in a new zealand breeding program, especially as I get the impression that none came with a pedigree?

They are probably still fine meat rabbits however, as all breeds and crosses are edible. :) Mutts have their own advantages as well, as you can breed for whatever color or body type you like with no restrictions.

Thank you very much -
We are not concerned about showing them, but we are wanting to breed for meat. If I'm understanding correctly, even if they are mutts, they should do well for meat?

If you look in the meat rabbit forum instead of breed discussion you'll find helpful information on how to evaluate rabbits for that purpose. You don't have to think about perfect--just good enough, and it doesn't take long to start having meat and over time you learn how to look at the rabbits and which to eat and which to keep and breed.
Happy learning, happy eating, and welcome to RT
