I ordered brass valves from Klubertanz and used some food grade buckets to make new waterers for the growout pens.

I drilled a hole in the top for venting and filling, and hot glued screen on the underside to prevent bugs and debris from getting into the bucket. I hung them from the top of the cage with short lengths of chain.

In other news, I have started replacing my tyvek feed bag tarps with burlap sacks which I cut open. The tyvek was getting brittle in the sun. I like the fact that the rabbits still get natural light through the burlap, and I will also be able to spray it down in the heat of the day.

I would add wire to the buckets asap, they will chew holes through it in no time flat...

Good suggestion. But I have had other buckets in there for months (the valves had a rubber gasket and the rabbits chewed that so they weren't holding water w/out leaking), and so far, so good. No chewing.

I will watch for it though! :)

I like the burlap on the top of the crates. Definitely giving your buns filtered sunlight they need plus will keep them cool.

Also like your idea of the new waterers.

Plus I definitely got to get some of those baby bunny buckets. Bunnies seem to really like them.

Hey, Mamasheepdog, what is the exact valves you bought?

A107 Valves:

I have Bass valves on my automatic system in the barn. I like that the stem is fully exposed. The Klubertanz valves are great too- very heavy duty-but they have that bevel which blocks full motion of the stem.

Thank you, Sistah. It will save me a lot of time filling those bottles.

Next project- those last two grow out pens! The house is smelling like a Hamster farm since the bunnehs you brought me are in here!

I forgot to report that I put about 1/8 cup of DE in each bucket. It is supposed to help prevent algae growth. I also added about 1/2 a tablespoon of apple flavored electrolytes that I had on hand for the horses.

I wish something like this would work here year round. I like winter but wish some things did not freeze. My electric bill feels the strain of all the water heaters come December.

Hey, I wonder if a bit of heat tape would work to keep it thawed without melting the buckets?

Even here it wont work all year- but it saves me the work in the warm months. :) I don't think heat tapes get hot enough to melt plastic, especially when the vessel contains water. Primitive societies used skin (leather) pots to cook over an open fire, and as long as there was enough liquid above the flames, the "pot" would not ignite.
