Stud finding?

Like some others, we started our rabbitry the wrong way, with not a lot of research or knowledge about rabbits. I saw the set up of the farm we bought ours from and of course the cute baby bunnies, and thought "how hard can it be?" Well, fast forward to now and several litters which have all but the last few have been sold as highly socialized pets, and I'm rethinking a lot. Repenting for my sins, if you will. Our buck is now neutered (he's an escape artist, which accounts for a few of those litters), and we still want to breed, so I'm purchasing a junior doe and possibly another proved doe with more desirable qualities, but I don't want to keep a buck here. We have a colony set up with our current does and I don't like keeping them in cages right now, that may change if we move to a bigger piece of property, where I can have a couple bigger runs.

My question is, how does one go about finding a stud buck? I know with RHDV it's tricky and a lot of the rabbitries around me are closed for a good reason. I've thought about buying a buck and then gifting him to a friend who will take good care of him as a pet, with the understanding that he will breed with our does...

If you choose to go that route I'd get everything in writing so you both completely understand what is to be expected. Ie if there are any health concerns or behavioral problems ?

What about keeping your possible buck as a house bunny? I have an intact buck as a house bunny and he's great! He is completely litter trained and doesn't chew anything he's not supposed to ( I may have lucked out in this department ). The breeder I purchased him from did use him for breeding.

Great suggestion! I will make sure to get everything in writing. As for a house bun, I would do that in a heartbeat! But my husband is very strict about no animals in the house. We are currently looking for more land and when that happens, space won't be an issue, but for now I can't have an intact buck here.
