I am looking forward to getting our honeybees delivered!!! We make a lot of mead, so honey is becoming important due to $$$.

Our kids will benefit from the experience as well our garden.

What kind of honeybees do you all manage? I sure could use some experience in this area.

I was just thinking... honey-glazed rabbit sounds delicious.

My fiance does the same thing, except it's not limited to just bees. Wasps, any flying bugs, anything that gets too close or falls near him or wind blows it to him...

I am actually quite proud of my progress lately...I was recently driving in the car with my kids and I had my hair braided with the braid laying over my shoulder. I felt something tickle my collarbone and assumed it was just hair from the braid. I reached up to brush the braid off my shoulder and felt something distinctly un-hair-like...then I felt a sharp sensation on my neck under my fingers. I very calmly opened the window and flicked the bee out...all without screaming OR crashing OR even letting the kids know... LOL! Turned out it did NOT sting me, must have been just its little scratchy feet or something that felt sharp.

If you ever do get stung, put some baking soda in a piece of folded paper towel or gauze and pour vinegar on it- the pain will be greatly reduced. Sometimes I secure the pad with plastic wrap, and the added heat seems to help draw the venom out.

Shall we meet in Oklahoma on the way to Justin's for dinner? Surely now that you are a Moderator he wont want to offend you by allowing only me to come dine with his family!

I think there is room for one more and it would be awesome if you could join us! :)

Just let me send a message to the bees that the dinner party is canceled. This way they don't feel like they've been uninvited.

Hey...I'm new here. This is only my second post. Saw your thread about bees. I've been keeping bees for three years now. I've only had one hive up till yesterday, but yesterday I acquired a second hive and have a friend who wants to give me his hive this spring...so that will give me three. I have Italian bees...(no they don't smell like garlic!) Very easy...the work to reward ratio is definitely in the beekeeper's favor. First year I kept them, I didn't try to get any honey off of them as I got started late and left them all the honey they produced, just so they could survive. Second year I got 65lbs of honey from them (even though they swarmed and half the hive left)...last year I only got 35 lbs. of honey from them. I only spend perhaps a dozen or so hours each year with them. My first year with them, I got stung a few times, but to be honest, I wasn't wearing protection (aside from a veil) and I was rushing and in a hurry. I think the bees picked up on that. Last two years, I haven't been stung at all (knock on wood), and it's not so horrible. Good luck with your beekeeping adventure. I give family jars of honey at Christmas and people love it and clamor for more!
