How to sterilize cages

Post Number:#1  Unread postby Shea » Tue Jun 18, 2019 9:30 am

I have the opportunity to get a bunch of cages for free. The catch is that the herd that was housed in them had vent disease and a few other unknowns roll through from time to time.
They have been washed with bleach when emptied and most were left to dry in the sun, but its not something I want to chance infecting my herd with.
Should I scrub with bleach, then ammonia, and leave out in the sun again? Or is there some other way to clean them.

10% bleach solution was good enough to use in diagnostic micro lab, where we grew known pathogens (at least, the instructors knew). It convinced me to trust it (I mix the dilutions myself).

I scrub them, then torch them [being sure to leave no "junk" at all on the wire], bleach them, then let them set in the sun-- never had a problem with used cages...
meat-mutt rabbits, a few laying hens.

I was thinking of torching them. One needs to be painted anyway. And torhing should help paint stick better.
