So my husband added two nearly-adult narragansetts to the backyard. They look like monsters. Someone in our town was getting rid of them because they were killing their chickens (!!!).

So now I guess they try to kill me?

Hopefully they'll be eaten by the end of the month.

Are turkeys really so evil? I wanted to have a few someday as I thought they were better tempered then evil geese.

Duck, and pheasant and quail oh my!

I think the modern day dumbed-down turkeys might be less so. Narraganset are a heritage breed that has wild turkey in it's lines, so maybe some have a more wild disposition?

I've never personally raised one, but a friend raised a few white ones one year, and they were incredibly stupid and very mellow.

That pretty well describes the two white ones I had. I got three to raise. One got eaten for thanksgiving, and the other two turned out to be hens who started laying. So we enjoyed turkey eggs for a while, although sadly both died on their own before we got around to butchering. The stupid things would hunker down and want to be bred every time I went in the chicken house. Not sure what that was all about...

FIL used to tell the story of a Tom turkey his sister had. I don't know what kind it was, but he said that turkey would attack every chance it got and keep coming back for more no matter how often you grabbed it by the neck and threw it across the yard. :x

She raised four and sold three, so we all butchered them together on Christmas Eve morning and had them for dinner. It was more tough than usual, but the flavor more than compensated for that. I thought at the time that it was good muscle tone from ranging the hills! Now I know the carcass should rest for a few days, but ours went straight into the oven after a short time.

They had to be taught to eat, and it took days. I saw an episode of Dirty Jobs of a commercial turkey operation, and they dye the crumble green to attract them. They loved grass, so that makes perfect sense to me.

My camera is being SO wonky. We broke ours on vacation, and purchased one on vacation (we took one of those...this is our last vacation for a few years 2-week trips...I figured at that point what's $300 if I can't take any pictures for that long) and it just won't communicate with my computer. It does with the laptop but I hate using it. This is a picture from the home they were at. I might be able to get some off of my cell.

LOL

He does have creepy purpose, though!

He was sitting on our 14 some odd foot tall chicken coop the other day, and friday I caught both of them crowing our lawn furniture by the pool.

My uncle had a wild turkey take up in his yard, turned into a pet! Finally died of old age after a few years. I was always terrified to go near him, He threatend to chase me a couple of times, but he never harmed anyone or anything.
